County Gets $330K in Anti-Smoking Funds

Not many know Debi Austin by name. But it's hard to shake the image of her in the public service announcement where she takes a drag from a cigarette through a hole in her throat. The Stanislaus County Office of Education is counting on Austin, a longtime smoker who had her larynx removed because of cancer, to deter local students from using tobacco.

"It's amazing how many of our young people are smoking," prevention director Vicki Bauman said.

"They're resilient and they think they're untouchable. Sometimes you have to use the shock factor."

Thursday, nearly $330,000 in tax money from cigarette sales filtered down to the county office of education for anti-smoking education.

Statewide, nearly $10 million in Tobacco-Use Prevention Education money was given out to 42local education agencies.

Other local recipients included the Tuolumne County SuperintendentofSchools office, which received nearly $130,000, and Manteca Unified School District, which received more than $37,000.

Schools get $90,000 grant

Bauman said four county junior high schools earned a share in a separate, one-time $90,000 grant for prevention efforts. At least 50 percent of students at those schools said they were thinking about smoking or were smokers, according to a California Healthy Kids Survey during the 2004-2005 school year.

At the junior high and high school levels, Bauman said, prevention efforts include speakers such as Austin and field trips to local hospitals to visit patients with emphysema and severe asthma. Peer groups also are formed to help kids quit smoking, she said.

Bauman said there is a trend of young girls becoming smokers to curb their appetites and lose weight.

To try to change their minds, the girls' photos are put into a computer and age-progressed to show the effects of smoking for 10 or 20 years, Bauman said.

But isn't smoking fairly harmless and isn't it the constitutional right of the students to smoke in class? Anyone want to blow some smoke for awhile?

Can we tax condom sales so we can fund anti-premarital sex education?

(abstinence... ;-)

Bravo Sierra! After smoking for 10 years I was still being carded to buy cigarettes. After 20 years, everyone thought my daughter was my sister.

This Grade-A Pure BBQ pigs' feet. All states depend on the tax revenue from tabacco. If everyone quit, they'd be in chaos.

I've never smoked, but I've raised three boys to adulthood.

I'm applying for a grant to see who "ages" more quickly in the long run; a female smoker with NO kids, or the non-smoking mother of three boys, LOL! :)

Lou Grant? Can't stand his guts, but he was pretty funny on a "curb" episode... Yes, the wrinkle-power of smoking is well-documented.

Even bigger chaos if there are less new recruits to replace, uh, the uh, quitters. For the love of God, can you meet the young students at the hospital and give them the other side, the bbq pig's feet side, so that they are not brainwashed against smoking?

Every source from the antis is suspect. I'm becoming more and more convinced that your presence on this site is for spam purposes and viral marketing for the freedom-hating antis.

Zealotry controls yours. And no lie is too big if it furthers your twisted agenda. It's disgusting to watch. And I'd thank you to remember the rule to ping the person you are insulting. Please don't forget to do this again.

I don't see an insult, only a quote, a threat, your leader's threat to me. Sorry you can't control me. Ping whomever you want.

Here's the hole quote:

Listen. I know who you are and I know where you live.

I have printed out your accusation toward me and I will take this to my attorney on Monday.

And you KNOW you can't EVER back up your statement against me because none of it is true. Enough is enough!

You keep on badgering me, and you will rue the day that you did! --Shelyin

I will never "ping" or otherwise respond to this person ever again.

Yes, you of course are the totally innocent victim of evil smokers once again. But when you do decide to post an insult about her, just remember to ping her.

Rules don't apply to nanny-statist anti-smokers.......just ask one of them :)

One of the resident nanny-statists has posted yet another enlightening article.

It never ceases to amaze me how many FReepers so thoroughly embrace the nanny-state.
