August 7, 2006 · Many African-American leaders have lost touch with a hallmark of the civil rights movement -- the tradition of self-empowerment, Juan Williams says in his new book. Instead, they've embraced the notion of "victimhood," the NPR senior correspondent says.
His book is called Enough: The Phony Leaders, Dead-End Movements, and Culture of Failure That Are Undermining Black America -- and What We Can Do About It.
"I think it's a terrible signal to our young people about who black people are to have us constantly wrapped in the cloak of victimhood, and to have black leadership that in a knee-jerk fashion defends negative, dysfunctional behavior," Williams tells Steve Inskeep.
Their conversation begins a week-long series on the state of leadership in the African-American community, and contemporary African-American life.

The old "broken clock is right twice a day" syndrome strikes again. Juan is a political moron about most things, but he's got that one right.
Can't wait to see the attacks launched against him by his former pals on the far left!
Woah, Juan Williams is saying this? I don't think I've ever agreed with him until now.
African American troubles are, well, so 20th Century. Black people are just one of the many colorful ethnic groups which make up Aztlan. Learn Spanish my friends. If you're on the East Coast, you might consider Portugese.
"I heard a prizefight manager say to his fellow, who was losing badly, 'David, listen to me, it's not what he's doing to you. It's what you're not doing.'"
I remember hearing another quote from Cosby that I've always liked - "I don't know what the secret to success is, but I know that the secret of failure is trying to please everyone.
Watch him get suspended from NPR for this.
Wow, JWill, didn't know you had it in ya!
While I applaud Juan for stepping up and saying these things, while at CNN, wasn't he a part of the machine that he now criticizes? Didn't CNN cut its teeth by promoting "victimhood" by minorities in its one-sided news stories?
He was attacked several years ago. I think it's what got him to write more on this subject.
If his name wasn't Juan and he didn't have a privileged skin color, he'd be without portfolio.
Juan Lieberman Williams is about to be voted off the plantation.
He's getting it.
;-)
I've ordered the book.
Always remember..Juan on Juan....winning basketall..jake
How to think like a loser:
1)Everybody is a racist
2)It's everyone else's fault
3)It's not my responsibility
4)Everybody is unfair to me
5)It's too hard
6)It's no use
Hey liberal Juan - live it & love it. You made your bed all of these yrs with those pukes. I as one will never accept anything you say. You & that "deer in the lights' looking nag from NPR are again the reasons why I never watch you on Sundays & my guess is the Shannity & Combs fiasco will start losing viewers. Liberalism isn't worth a minute of discussion.
WOW! I had not seen or hear of this.
