A man who said he worshipped Satan and enjoyed killing three people, stabbing and beating them and stomping on them with steel-toed boots, was executed Tuesday.
Darrell Ferguson, 28, the youngest person put to death in Ohio since 1962, died by injection at 10:21 a.m. at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility.
He had asked for the death penalty and chose not to pursue appeals, which could have delayed his execution for years.
Ferguson was the second inmate executed using the state's new lethal injection protocol, adopted after an execution in May was delayed while prison staff struggled to find a useable vein on that inmate, who asked them to find another way to kill him.
Officials said Ferguson's veins were closely examined before his execution, and the guidelines called for two injection sites to be prepared plus a new method of ensuring veins stay open.
He was convicted of three counts of aggravated murder in the Christmas Day killing of Thomas King, 61, in 2001 and the deaths the next day of Arlie Fugate, 68, and his wife Mae, 69. King was disabled and used crutches, Arlie Fugate had cancer and Mae Fugate took meals to wheelchair-using neighbors.
The victims let Ferguson into their homes in Dayton because they knew him. Ferguson's mother had been married to King's brother, and Ferguson's family had once lived near the Fugates.
Ferguson committed the murders after getting a two-day pass from a drug treatment program he had been ordered to attend following a burglary conviction.
At his sentencing, he taunted the victims' families, saying he worshipped Satan, enjoyed the killings, had no remorse, and, if released from prison, would pick up where he left off.
Defense attorney Victor Hodge said Ferguson's behavior might have been a ploy to make sure he was sentenced to death so he could avoid spending the rest of his life in prison.
And the organs can be used in transplants.
One less sub-human to feed.
A Satan worshipper sent to meet his god. How fitting.
Any last words?
Didn't work.
The Democratic Party strongly supports full Civil Rights for Necro-Americans.
For a 28-year old to get executed in California, he'd have to have been a fetus when he committed the crime.
The RATs have been supporting Civil Rights for the deceased at least since the time of the RAT inspired Tammany Hall; it's just Boss RAT, and now deceased (and hopefully not on the voting rolls) Mayor Richard Daley perfected it to an art form.
This man was clearly possessed by demons, not uninvited!
Ok Ohio, youre on a role keep up the good work.
Well, no one would really want that face, would they?
Mister tough guy who kill 3 elderly people would have spent every day in prison wishing he was dead. He took the cowards way out because being traded around for a smoke is a hard life. I hope where ever he is now is worse and that the relatives of his victims found some small amount of comfort in his death.
Five years from crime to punishment. Not bad.
Now if we could only return to the days when delta-t was 5 minutes or, at most, 24 hours.
I understand that William McKinley's assassin was tried, convicted, and executed all within five weeks.
In the West, during especially lawless days, executions happened within 24 hours. Convicted on Monday, hung on Tuesday.
If you forced defense attorneys to do their pro bono defense of P-O-Ss like this fellow truly pro bono, then they wouldn't do it anymore. But the Legal Services Foundation, and other state organizations, pay almost full legal rates so these d-ckhead lawyers get government subsidy to act like, speak like, and live their liberal ideals.
How'd you like to earn $150/hr to host a talk radio show? Same thing.
They've gone from executing the perp in two days, then to five weeks, and now in some places ten to twenty years, and they call that progress?
Say hi to him now that you get to meet him in person.
