Enzymes feasting on C02 will combat global warming (yep, global warming alert)

Nano Spot We're all saved!

By Mark Wendman: Wednesday 09 August 2006, 13:46

A SIGNIFICANT advance that might have potential to reverse global warming has been developed, but yet to be commercialised on a large scale. The technology provides a biochemical means to safely scrub CO2 from concentrated sources of the gas, like smokestacks of numerous types. The advance was enabled by isolation of the enzyme in animals that removes Carbon Dioxide from blood to permit exhaling CO2 gas. Application of a spot of gene cloning can make this technology fix commercially practical.

The advance has been achieved in partnership with a research team at the University of Laval in Quebec City. A recent tech startup called CO-2 Solution is planning to clone production of the enzyme for possible commercial scale application to addressing smoke stack CO2 greenhouse gas abatement. The firm is listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange. And has a web site here.

This mind-boggling technical feat - focused innovation that might defeat the massive accumulation of greenhouse gases, presages a potential avenue for a viable concerted attack on the root cause of global warming - large scale CO2 emissions. The byproducts of the enzymatically assisted scrubbing of CO2 are harmless Carbonate and Hydrogen gas. Simple and elegant, might even yield a viable source of Hydrogen fuel if done on a very large scale.

One can envision that when the stark reality of global warming breaks through the thick skull of some powerful politician's head we might see the implementation of a greenhouse gas abatement tax - or broad adoption of technology based on this enzyme capture of CO2 to remediate many industrial processes, that generate profuse CO2 emissions.

Kyoto redux but with positive substantive results. Forget speculative greenhouse gas fixes and economic scale backs - this CO2 abatement technology maye be applied universally and cost effectively.

The firm CO2 Solution is yet to attract substantial commercialfunding, but if this technology can solve a common universal problem by a truly novel and practical means, that shouldn't be long in following. All respect goes out to the innovative research team at CO2 Solution. µ

Interesting possibility, if you can overlook the liberal bias acting like global warming is a given and is caused by man-made CO2 emissions.

If this were edited for crap content it would be a pretty interesting article. I wonder how many will quit reading after the first few lines of global warming hysteria?
Thanks for putting it up though!

Sounds like fusion power, just around the corner with a little more funding. CO2 abatement will not stop global warming which has been happening since the end of the last ice age.

Algae eats CO2.

Algae creates oil.

There's the answer.

The problem with removing C02 is, how much is enough and how much is too much?

Remove too much from the atmosphere and global warming will be the least of their problems.

Exactly! Has there ever been a more efficient carbon-sequestering "technology"? Plus...they are self-propogating!!!!!!

The firm CO2 Solution is yet to attract substantial commercialfunding...

So people in the know don't see any economic purpose in this...Let's just throw billions and billions of federal dollars there way.

I've always said that if and when GW is shown to be a real problem, and if CO2 is the prime culprit, then TECHNOLOGY will bail us out. The problem with the GW "movement" is that it is, essentially, a luddite, anti-capitalist, anti-US movement.

Dems will only go for it if the source of the enzymes is aborted fetuses, to turn the abortuaries "waste product" into a profit center.

Sigh.

I have a BS in Chemical Engineering. As part of my senior year plant design, I designed a CO2 scrubber for an ethylene oxide plant.

The technology to scrub CO2 from gases exists today.

First - it isn't cheap.
Second - CO2 isn't a pollutant.
Third - plant some trees. They're cheap, nice to look at and have many valuable by-products. They're very efficient CO2 scrubbers themselves and cost nothing to operate.

Sorry folks...this is just more anti-industry tripe.

CO2 leaves the blood the same way O2 enters it: diffusion of gases with different partial pressures through a permeable membrane. Since atmosperic concentrations of CO2 are about 0.3%, it is very easy for CO2 to leave the blood.

IMHO, we need an "enzyme" to prevent junk science.

Interesting. I can see the power industry being interested just for the ability to remove oxides of nitrogen (which is one thing that the enzymes alone cannot do). NOx are a big no-no in most EPA "non-attainment" areas like Los Angeles, Houston, and a number of other major metro areas with photochemical smog problems.

I have my doubts that any effective man-made carbon sequestration system will ever see daylight as long as the enviro-socialists have CO2 and capitalism to blame.
