It's stone that they use to prevent erosion. Sometimes you see it in wire bags. It's acts as a bang board for waves rather than a soil shoreline or embankment.

Rip Rap is vollyball size or larger rock used to stabalize stream banks.

Before it was crushed, gravel is riprap size
