This first plan is what military tactics call for: It was the proper way to attack guerrillas and would have saved
many civilian lives.

It brings to mind the old adage, better an army of sheep led by an lion, then an army of lions led by a sheep.

This plan was supposed to have begun with a surprise air onslaught against the Hezbollah high command in Beirut, before they would have had time to relocate to their underground bunkers. This was to have been followed immediately by large scale airborne and seaborne landing operations, in order to get several divisions on the Litani River line, enabling them to outflank Hezbollah's "Maginot line" in southern Lebanon. This is the way you bring all elements of combat power to bear on the enemy's weakness. IDF officers who attended my infantry officer's advanced course and CGSOC were very proficient in manuever warfare. The only reason for their (IDF) poor showing thus far that I could think of, is of course political interferrence. Sadly, this article confirms my suspicions.

Yep.
If Israel stops now, and it is almost certain they will, they will have lost this war. Hezbollah was the weakest foe they have faced. But they went to war with the weakest leadership they have ever had.
Olmert is disgusting.
