THE alleged plot to blow up ten aircraft in mid-air would have killed an unprecedented number of passengers, terrorism experts said today.
Professor Paul Wilkinson, of the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence at St Andrews University, said nothing on this scale had succeeded before.
"This is really a very ambitious plot indeed, it is the kind of spectacular potentially lethal attack which the al-Qaida network has been particularly interested in carrying out," he said.
"I would be very surprised if it was found that they were not involved as a movement. It is possible I suppose that some other movement could have copied the kind of techniques that had been used by the al-Qaida network, but I think that's unlikely.
"I don't think we should in any way underestimate it . . . and the authorities are right to be responding with exceptional measures."

In the UK, "Asians" typically means people from the Asian subcontinent, i.e. India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, etc.
Across the pond they have a habit of refering to mideasterners as 'asians.'

Asia is a big place. Asian doesn't narrow the description a whole lot.

One, the perps they have already caught, should be pumped for information, then taken out and shot!
Two, what's the word on the explosive agent they were planning to use? A new form of plastique?
Three, round up the other suspects and deal with them!
