Frankly...and I know this will get me flamed...it's really no big deal. It's not like it's scanned or something...it is a picture id which is just matched against your driver's license to assure the seller that you are who you say you are. (as ID's go, anyway).
If you buy ammo with a credit card or debit card, you actually are supplying more info to the government than I am paying cash.

Sounds like a pretty big deal to me. You need an Firearm Owners ID. Do criminals also need a Firearm Owners ID, or just the law abiding?

If the driver's license is good enough to drive my 5500lb boat of a car then it is dang well enough to by bullets. I will never live in a state where I need periodically renewed permission to own guns. It is not an ID, it is PERMISSION from the state to own a gun. Not just to buy one to do buy ammo, but to own things that you legally already own (like someone moving in from out of state).
Pure socialism.
