This is just a plot by the airlines to prevent those of us who have had bad checked-bags experiences, from carrying our bags on board.
They want the opportunity to loose/damage/destroy more luggage.

Maybe an attempt to pump up FedEx, UPS and DHL.
More folks will follow the lead of some travel commentator like Peter Greenburg
(the guy that appears on Today Show and CNBC).
Send stuff ahead to your destination by FedEx/UPS/DHL.
(yeah, I know it's too pricey for most, but I bet some well-heeled
travelers will do it)

They want the opportunity to loose/damage/destroy more luggage. No, this is a negotiating ploy for their baggage handler unions. They are bargaining this away in lieu of a 10% pay increase. They are offering only 3% but the opportunity to rifle luggage.< / sarcasm>
