It really has me worried. These plans are in place. The cell phone deal show how massive it is going to be. When you have middle-Eastern men buy 1,000s of non-tracebable cell phones, you have trouble.

The government better toture the heck out of those guys to get information and the ACLU and the Libs better just shut up about it. There is one massive attack coming, that seems obvious. And it will hit many cities at once.

"When the government is given new powers in the name of fighting "crime" or "terrorism", how often does it use them for the stated purpose?"

The overwhelming majority of cell phone users have to give their names addresses, and be credit checked b4 they get their cell phones.
Its not giving the government "new powers" as you put it.
Not to mention, the Patriot Act has already saved us from at least 5 terrorist attacks, one of which was when using that act allowed FBI to catch those Islamofacst vermin that were about to blow up the Brooklyn Bride here in New York.
Just last month, we caught a bunch of Al Quaeda psychos that were plotting to blow up the PATH train that links New York to New Jersey, and drown those of us using that train.
That is government using these powers for exactly the purpose the powers were given right there.
What more ya got?

The three arrested in Caro with over 1,000 phones seemed to be more interested in the batteries than the phones:

"One man was driving while the other two were in the back opening the phone packages with box cutters throwing the phones in one box, batteries in another and the packaging and phone charger in another container. The suspects had 1000 other cell phones in the van."

Later on in the article:

"They also told officers they get stopped frequently and say they buy the phones for $20 and sell them elsewhere for $38. They sell them without the packaging or charger."

The two from Dearborn arrested last week were also "reselling" the gutted phones, and they were charged with money laundering. Aside from figuring out what they're doing with the batteries, the other key, obviously, is who is buying the phones, at almost double the price, sans charger and perhaps sans batteries. Most likely the same person(s) who fronted these guys the money to buy the phones.

Looking at the map of where the busts have been, it looks like if you live in Pittsburgh, Detroit, or Minneapolis/St. Paul, you may have extra cause for alarm. Looks like a cluster of them around those areas.

Not so much explosive components but detonation devices.

"The problem isn't in the giving of a name, address, or other info, even if it's all required how is it proven all of that is valid? "

They'll find out soon enough when they credit card you.
Plus they take your social security number as well.
At least I gave out mine when I first got my cell phone a few years back.

"And the whole idea behind the Pre Paid cell phone is that those that don't have a credit card, those that may not even have a bank account, can still get a cell phone without having credit"

True.
But they can still id people b4 they give them one of the pre-paids, like checking utility bills, driving licenses etc etc.
And even credit check you to make sure you actually are who you saw you are, only they won't use your credit score as a condition for giving you the phone.
These are dangerous times, and we need to act accordingly.

Trac phones don't need to be thrown away, they can't be traced and you can buy new minutes for them. However, they are probably not using most of them for communication but for remote detonators for bombs.

You use two of them, one is rigged to the bomb and then you use the second one to call it, this triggers the detonator and sets the bomb off. You can also rig the alarm on one phone, which is with the bomb, to set the detonator off.

These are NOT disposable phones, they are usable over and over again, you merely need to purchase more minutes for them to keep using them and they are untraceable, they are typically used to set off bombs however. No one needs to buy 100 of them, unless maybe you were going to equip an office force with them! Certainly you don't need to have 1000 of them such as the 3 guys caught in Dallas had!

That would trip a Meth Watch flag. More Lithium in the cell phone batteries, too.

They didn't buy 1000 at once, they traveled over several states to purchase these phones. Hence the map they had of the location of Wal-Marts over a large part of the US.

I understand that. But, at least since Jan 06 the Feds have been watching this.

One person bought 150 at a Target at one time. Kinda stupid.

If the throw away phones are untraceable, how could Homeland Security shut any of them off??

They can't shut them off unless they shut down on the relay stations(cells)that are used to send the calls out across the country. Trac phones are untraceable, the numbers are known only to the person who buys and registers it with the cell phone company that sold it. There is no way the FBI or any other agency can call these numbers and set any bombs off prematurely as has been suggested on this thread. Many people have a poor concept of what a trac phone is and how it is used.

It is NOT a one time use phone, the batteries are rechargable, the minutes are renewable and they can be used for communication freely because they can't be traced as a regular cell phone on monthly plan can.

Terrorists use them that way and they use them to set off bombs, it is a typical method for setting off the IDs used in Iraq for instance.

"How dumb am I? You can buy cell phones at the dollar store?"

Dollar General is cheap but it's not like "everything's a dollar". They do have some higher priced merchandise.

Most stores won't sell more than 2 or 3 to a customer, it is hard to believe that target will sell hundreds of them to one customer. The limit is the reason the 3 guys caught in Dallas were driving from Wal mart to Wal mart to buy them. They would each buy the set limit from each store.

(Ithaca is the city of evil.) CNN's newsticker this am: cops in Michigan arrested the three Middle Eastern men they caught the other day with dozens of cell phones, lots of cash and airline schedules and info. Strong hint that they're part of terror. According to the cops, they had cover stories -- preposterous cover stories, but they aren't rocket scientists -- were cooperative, yada yada yada. Straight out of bin Laden's terror play book, which CNN was talking about on Anderson Cooper's show last night.
