"Law enforcement officials say they are fighting a losing battle as long as the hunt is for a bomb not the bomber. "

Methodist Grandmothers be forewarned; you will besearched.

How do you put together a law case....if one has A, another has B and another has C BEFORE it's detonated??

How do you stop A, B & C from grouping.

Wow...thinking about this and can see why they decided to do what they did at the airports. Take A, B & C away from eveyone. Brilliant!!

Airport security is shocked to search and 'wand' a cheerful female travelling alone.

Last trip out of Dallas, I set off the metal detector. Nothing in my pockets, no jewelry except wedding rings and cheap earrings. The security woman waved me over to the search area. She wanded me - it was the sparkles on my tank top!

I just thought it was kinda funny and kept a great attitude. I was on vacation and this was just part of the adventure. (I am a blonde.) The woman was very kind and we had a good laugh when I was cleared. My poor husband is not blessed with this sense of humor and almost had a panic attack, but no harm.

More searches should be made based on the situation, not random chance. I set off the alarm. A suspicious looking person should "set off an alarm". Hire good screeners and let them work.

If they use 70+% (or even less) it will certainly react when it is only in ordinary bottles and O2 will be produced very fast, I guess that the bottle will bubble a lot and there will be a lot of H2O2 all over the place as well as burns for the person that opens the bottle. A nice countermeasure would be to use ultrasound and agitate a possible H2O2 bottle, it will for sure "explode" in a harmless explosion.

My husband and I are flying to Vegas next week. He said flying would be a big pain in the gluteus cause of the recent terror plot. I told him, not for us. I suggested we travel with a Middle Eastern Arab looking male between the ages of 20-35. Should get us breezed right through airport security.

can weak concentrations of H2O2 be upgraded in some way?

consider, ethanol can be upped from 95 to 99 percent by,

the water is selectively absorbed by pea gravel,
which is removed, leaving 99 percent.

It can not work, they can not make TATP on board.

There are different ways to stabilize, and there are different reagents. They would not have been able to do it in the exact manner and sequence linked. Obviously there was a successful test, else Britain would not have shut down air transport. The statement that it can not be done is dangerous. The agent is being called, generically, acetone peroxide. A couple of hydrogen molecules here and a carbon link there only yields a teeny bit less energy release. Still can be viable.

It takes time to evaporate the water the a/p forms in.

Absorption with s****a overcomes this, yielding a "gel". There are creative ways to accelerate and decelerate reactions.

I agree that it is a dangerous (and unstable) substance, and we should not argue about this or that reaction in a public thread. The mere fact that they had the intent is sufficient for me.

The point is, someone in a lab verified it. Most people do not think twice about why consumer grade drain cleaners come in liquid form ONLY nowadays...

OK folks. WHAT'S THIS about???....

Arabs, talking in Arabic on the internet, on "Islam-on-Line" about acetone peroxide and the FBI?? From what I can tell readin git, this is a post from 28 July 2006, a full two weeks before this case broke:

http://www.islamonline.net/discussiona/message.jspa?messageID=12850

Accomplished using a word search involving that chemical composition, of Arabic language search engines and chant groups...

Do you recall the explosion and fire at Harvard (wasn't that the cmpus?) not too long ago? I wonder, could there have been some 'cooking' going on, making TATP? It would be standard op for authorities to put out a disinformation story to cover the terrorist connection.

"Umm... maybe the name "Abdul" would be a tip off."

Innocent people can be used as "mules" to unknowingly carry explosives as well.

The entire public can be a threat.

In 1987 an airliner crashed in California.

David A Burke murdered over 40 people.....

"While the aircraft was cruising at 22,000 feet over the central California coast, the cockpit crew heard two shots in the passenger cabin and radioed a frantic message to Oakland air traffic controllers: “There’s gunfire aboard!” Moments later, the plane entered a high-speed nosedive and smashed onto a cattle ranch approximately 15 miles southwest of Paso Robles and near the small coastal town of Cayucos."

You have to check everyone. technology will rise to the challenge to make it much faster to do this.

It just takes ONE of those SOBs to get something through.
And if you think a white face is safe everytime, Would you fly often if nobody ever checked white people?

TSA are moronic automatons. Acquaintance of mine was cleared to carry a loaded pistol on an aircraft(police business)TSA knew that, of course, but still insisted on seizing his fingernail clippers.

Yes it can be concentrated in several ways.

The more concentrated it gets, the more dangerous the process becomes.

The bottles containing the liquids were to have false bottoms.

I imagine the terrorists were planning a trip to the privy for their chemistry. I suspect they had each tried this process on the ground so they knew what to expect.

I always get searched, because I sometimes fly one way and have apparently been forever branded. And I don't like the inconvenience any more than anyone else.

But what if they exempted elderly people, for example? If you were a terrorist and wanted to secrete something among the belongings of a person or disguise youself as somebody, who would you pick?
