Hey there. This is Jericho, the writer of the Archie piece. I'd forgotten about this article as it was written a long time ago, and remembered it only because a friend Googled my name out of curiosity. Imagine my surprise when this link popped up.
My writing back then clearly had a lot of issues, but I did want to say that the point of this was never to complain. As commented on above by a previous poster, it was about losing my illusions about life here in Canada, and what obviously didn't get communicated very well was how comforting it was to have a picture of life in a foreign country that I had no clue about. I could have picked a better choice, but I was young and this was the most comforting one scenario at the time so I guess I just stuck with it.
Fascinating to note the affirmative action perspective about my writing though, in one of the comments above. I don't have a problem with people thinking the piece above was drivel, but the opinion that this was drivel that was given good marks because it was written by a minority...well, I have to admit that one stung. I'd hate to think that my successes have come to me because of the colour of my skin rather than my actual capabilities, but that's always been the other edge of the affirmative action sword.
Thank you all for the opinions and perspectives offered here, positive, negative and everything in between. It was quite informative.
I think it's great that you found this thread.
That movie did well for a documentary.
I read Beatle Bailey so I joined the Army.......Now I'm waiting for the X-men to come out of hiding and help fight the Islamo facists......
