The Fair Tax is progressive. Consumption tax increases as the level income increases Fair Tax FAQ #49.
----

No, it's regressive.

If you make $10,000 per year and I make $100,000 per year and we both buy a boat for $1,000 at say, 10% tax then we both pay $100.

That $100 is only 0.1% of my income and 1.0% of your income. That's a regressive tax system.

We need a flat tax.

Your example doesn't work. People who make more generally spend more, hence they are taxed more. If you are spending a lot on that income, you have more problems than just taxes.

Amen - 17% flat tax as 10% federal, 5% state, and 2% local.

This would have to include the elimination of 40,000 pages of tax code too.

Neither one of us will pay any tax if it is a used boat. Fair Tax FAQ #1.

Regardless of that fact, you are still missing a fundamental point. The income tax does not and the flat tax will not give us a choice on the amount will be taxed. Both take the money before we see our paycheck. The consumption tax will allow people to determine how much they want to be taxed since it will not be applied until the consumer decides to make the purchase. That is the freedom offered by the Fair Tax that the Flat Tax fails to address.

the retail tax in my opinion is a flat tax....x% of anyone/everyones consumption less the basics.

the more you spend the more government resources you are using....

a $10,000 boat requires roadways to get to the lake, boat ramps to get in the water......coast guard to keep you in check....etc.....all of these had federal funds included in their construction and up keep.....if i buy one....pay to play! (Fair Tax)

a million dollar Lear jet requires lots of federal resources to own and fly.....airports, air traffic control...if i don't buy one....i am not directly contributing to those resources financially.....if i do purchase one then i do....the tax is the cost of owning one......pay to play! (Fair Tax)

the Fair Tax is fair!!!
