The
headline in the Crónica de Hoy today is "With more than 80% of the votes counted, there is no variation." For a major newspaper in Mexico City to put this banner up in bold print on their front page is nothing less than the equivalent of saying to everyone "THE PRD ARE LIARS," given the incredible spin effort they have undertaken to tell everyone that the partial recount has gone their way and mandated a full hand recount of everything remaining. I've got to believe they are very unhappy in
La Tierra del Sol Azteca right now.
The
article with the details on the recount shows that most of the numbers reveal little variation, though I do note that, even though they mention Jalisco, they do not post the tally on the recount there, where there may be a net gain of over 2,000 for Lopez Obrador. There also is no mention of Guanajuato, which is what I'm really looking for right now.

Yes; I saw that. I think there is a good chance that, if Mexico gets through this post-electoral controversy without any serious damage, which is not a given by any means, that things could really take a turn for the better of the whole country given that the PRI and PAN have made the peace between themselves, which forms the underpinning of progress on the legislative front in the next administration. But I think the PRD probably understands this as well as we do and they may just decide to sabotage everything right now to prevent that progress. The Latin American Left knows the strategy of "Miserification" only too well. I'm looking for the PRD to try to implement it in Mexico.

Evo Morales (Bolivia) may be strong in a weak and uninfluential country, but Chavez has elections in December (which have mobilized his opposition) and Castro, well...
Mexico could mark the turning point, and the PAN / PRI alliance could be the straw that breaks the statists' back.
To: Shuttle Shucker
God I hope you're right. Whatever actually
does happen, this controversy is going to mark a turning point.
I've just begun translating an article to put up on the board today. A qualified source says the TRIFE will do no more for AMLO's coalition but they might open more packets to address PAN's challenges.

Meanwhile The Herald continues abusing its position of power by insulting the private sector for not supporting ObraGore:

The Miami Herald needs to be shaken up to see if it approves of this kind of stuff...

My wife is on the phone with her parents in Monterrey.
Apparently the Obradorians tried a little mischief at the toll collection booths in Mty, but the Regios would have none of it. Several of the troublemakers where smacked and the rest were ignored. Many Regios were told to just drive for free, but INSISTED on paying at the booths just to make a point they wouldn't be bullied.
But here is a good one (if you hadn't heard): Obragore is comparing himself to GHANDI now that the recount is complete with no material difference.

Ghandi huh? That just sickens my stomach.
And props to the good citizens in Monterey who stood up for themselves and the law.
I've got a translation just about ready to put up. Maybe 20 minutes. Interesting I think.

I just got back from vacation and I cant believe this s**t is still going on.
ObraGore has less of a leg to stand on than Gore did in 2000, how the hell is he dragging this out? Calderon should give the army and police a raise and then carry on business as though this loser doesnt exist.
To: RightWingNilla
Well I hope you had a nice vacation.
It's going to be the "death of a thousand cuts" for AMLO RightWingNilla. He ticks me off too, but the evidence of the recount is in, and it didn't fly.
I'm going directly to post a new translation now. Stand by and check your pings.

Did the ObraGorians keep the toll money paid by noble regios in Nuevo Leon? That would be a crime. Not that taking over the booths wasn't in the first place, but Fox needs to avoid creating martyrs or emboldening the Left.
To: StJacques
and especially for a man who has the support of the Zapatistas in Chiapas who embarrassed the army a few years back.
Whatever you or I think of AMLO, the Zapatistas are NOT backing him... they think he's insufficiently revolutionary, and mounted a well-publicized, semi-successful absention campaign in the election. There have been rumors for years that the Zapatistas work with the Conservative PAN party, finding it easier to get concessions from them. PAN still has some "synarchist" elements (the most prominent being Mrs. Fox) which is a weird, Mexican mix of fascism and Catholic social teachings from the early 20th century. The synarcists would trade support for the Zapatistas' "municipio libres" (self-ruled areas, free of federal and state government oversite) in return for letting their "betters" run the national economy.
The left is in the Juarezista tradition, wanting to modernize the "Indians" and bring them into the national economy.

You are correct that Sub-Commandante Marcos stated that the PRD had "betrayed" the Mexican Left and he referred to Lopez Obrador as a "neo-liberal" and would not give an official endorsement because he rejects the ballot box as a means to change. But there was a rally late in the campaign in Mexico City in which a number of Zapatistas marched with the PRD, and some of them worked rather hard in his campaign. Let me quote
one source if I may:
"
. . . At the same time, Lopez Obrador has largely weathered the critique of subcomandante Marcos and the Zapatistas, who are carrying out their la otra campana [the Other Campaign], a speaking and organizing tour that rejects all political parties and seeks to unify Mexicos social resistance movements. When pressed, Marcos will deny that the Zapatistas are urging a 'no' vote on Lopez Obrador, saying they only are stressing that the presidential election will bring no fundamental change to the people of Mexico. The intensive and massive support for Lopez Obrador represents a 'popular will' that the Zapatistas cannot ignore, according to a continuing Zapatista supporter I interviewed who also is working hard for Lopez Obrador. . . ."
I will agree though, that the language I used appears to overstate their support, so I accept the criticism as well-made.
And I don't know if you've seen it yet, but I put up another translation:

No, they were interfering with the transaction, not stealing the money. This was Denial Of Service operation in the real world.
And then if people paid in dollars they would start screaming -- not Pesos!
The Regios don't put up with crap like that -- the bottom line was the OrbaGorians didn't put a dent in anything.

because Marcelo Ebrard won the election for major using AMLO's fame (something like: "I'm his bestfriend"), unlike what any foreigner could thing Ebrard is not a "charismatic leader of masses". ironically if Ebrard really wants to be a president he'll have to stay with AMLO.
