Yucaipa is Ron Burkle's holding company named so because he grew up in or around Yucaipa. He used it to buy controlling positions in regional supermarkets, like Ralph's, and offload them to national chains, like Kroger, in the process becoming a billionaire.

Yucaipa is also an investment vehicle having obtained over $750 million from CalPers among other California state employees' pension funds even with (or because of?) Burkle's position as the largest single donor from California to the DNC. He and President Clinton have a 'warm friendship' according to the media.

CalPers, the country's largest public fund and a so-called champion of ethics, has never seen a demo crony it didn't like: Check out its managing Board (Willie Brown and major union heads)and its 'alternative investments' in the billions to like-minded liberals/ major donors.
