It sounds like an autologous stem cell transplant to me. This is a treatment that is used sometimes for cancer patients whose disease has relapsed after initial remission. It involves taking the patient's own stem cells from their bone marrow, then giving them back to the patient after undergoing powerful chemotherapy.

If the stem cells come from another person, then it is called an allogenic stem cell transplant. So these are adult stem cells we're talking about.

The only reason I know about this is because my wife has lymphoma, and a stem cell transplant may be one of the treatment options in her future.
