I happened to look at some movie box office numbers, and I noticed that The Da Vinci Code has just passed the three-quarters-of-a-billion dollar mark for world-wide receipts, in the process overtaking The Chronicles of Narnia for the 21st-ranked spot. That's a fairly impressive accomplishment, and I figured it would be sure to add fuel to the flame wars here at Free Republic.

Excuse me for a moment while I go microwave some popcorn...

Well, clearly hopeful fantasy is shown up now for the worthless, audience-free delusion it is and dark, blasphemous fantasy can now safely move to take the market completely.

The fictional book was entertaining, as I imagine the fictional movie is entertaining. MHO - most people that go to watch a fictional tale would like it, good director (Opie) good actor (Tom) and historic locations. Alas with a couple of young ones I need to wait until Netflix has it.

OK I'll bite.

I saw both movies and enjoyed them. I did like the Da Vinci Code a bit better. I think it was partly because my expectations for the Chronicles was higher. I had heard it was as good as the Lord of the Rings. It didn't come anywhere near the Lord of the Rings.

Just to add some fuel to the fire: The movie "Titanic" sucked!

Agreed on Chronicles, and agreed on Titanic.

I haven't seen it and won't. I borrowed the book so they didn't make any money off of me. It is blasphemous.

"that movie is disrespectfull to christianity."

I agree. All that witchcraft, talking animals, and the like. Terrible.

Given the respective size of their PR machines, I'm shocked that Narnia is right on the heels of a movie that people were saying would overtake Titanic.

I'm encouraged to see that Chronicles did as well as it did. I'm very hopeful that The Nativity Story will do very well this winter.

book was much better. Tom Hanks was better than I thought but still mis casted for it. Even though I don't like the French, I'd chase Audrey any day.

I liked the De Vinci Code book. I'll see the movie on DVD sometime. I'm not in a rush now that I know its theology is rubbish

Read and saw Da Vinci Code.....excellent! I'm halfway through another Dan Brown book which is a prequel to DVC.......Angels and Demons. It's about an anti-matter bomb placed in the Vatican during the selection of the new Pope.

And this is surprising because? Everyone knew this was a guaranteed blockbuster just based on the book sales. The fact that Hollyweird got to bash Catholicism with blatant lies and misrepresentations was a two-fer for them.

I'm still waiting for them to do "The Al-Aqsa Code" where it is revealed that Mohammed was a sun-crazed pedophile and his religion is actually a death-cult. Of course, this would have the virtue of being true, but Hollywuss wouldn't touch it with a 1,400 foot pole.
