Tortured Logic

Tortured logic By Karol Sheinin · August 17, 2006 11:30 AM
Andrew Sullivan, clearly wanting to engage with the "deranged", has asked that I provide evidence that an attack was imminent, and therefore, as I argued, that torture to obtain information about the impending attack was necessary and legitimate.

The entirety of Sullivan's argument, in particular his criticism of me, actually makes no sense. He writes:

"I have yet to read any evidence that an attack was "imminent". All the stories I've read have argued that the plot was for a dummy-run. Maybe Karol Sheinin has sources that I haven't read. If she has, she should provide them, or correct her post. If she has a different understanding of the term "imminent," then it would be helpful for her to say so."

I thought this was interesing. Like Sheinin, I used to read Sullivan's blogs, but now I think he's lost it. Check out the rest of the post.

Sullivan is now and has always been a palaeorectalist.

That is the sum and substance of his political stance.

He won't realize the danger until they come to cut off his head.

By all means, let them perfect their plot unhindered. We must wait for the day of the actual attack to act.

Sullivan suffers from some sort of guilt complex.

He was a eloquent neo-con but when we didn't live up to his Duke of Queensbury (no pun) standards he collapsed on his fainting couch.

They had airline tickets for today.

That is my understanding, too.
Also there was at least one "martyr" videotape found.

I have read two sites where these two facts are denied, with no documentation other than wishful thinking or dissimulation; that makes it possible, then, that the "government conspiracy" theory has a prayer of being taken seriously.

Sullivan's comments feel like what you get when you have to get something, anything in. They read like the rantings of someone who is trying to hold it all together, but doesn't quite make it. Perhaps he is having personal problems.

Sullivan seems to forget that a misconstrued "dry run" could really be a "wet run" leaving bodies hurtling into the Pacific as he and the other second-guessers, safely entrenched on terra firma, debate the finer points of timing and just exactly when to pull the rug out from under the plotters.

Can you say "counting deck chairs on the Titanic?"
