There was no reason to make it illegal in the first place. The US army did a large study in Panama years before and found no adverse effects on the troops. The Mexicans that were associated with it at the time caused racism to be the main influence in characterizing it as potentially dangerous and setting up the "stamp" issue. I do not smoke it personally. (flame suit on)

Perhaps nothing more powerful than persons that have turned against a conviction they once believed in. John Lott for example, author of: More Guns, Less Crime. Here comes LEAP.

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition -- LEAP. In the trenches, judges, prosecutors, LEOs, DEA, FBI etc. that have witnessed the WOD from the inside. Watch the 13 minute introduction video. Its excellent. The Web site is most informative.

Tvert said alcohol abuse “contributes to social problems like fighting, sexual assault, property damage and domestic violence. Marijuana use has never been linked to these types of issues.”

I smoked pot (as almost all my freinds did) for more than 20 years and have seen all kinds of other "issues" linked to marijuana use.

I've known people who drinking never displayed the problems linked to alcohol above, but when they smoked pot had all kinds of mental problems and couldn't drive a car safely.

I still don't think pot is that big of a deal in general, but I can say that since I quit, my mind is clearer and I am more stable emotionally than during the years I smoked.

I wonder what companies would do, that test for (and prohibit smoking) pot, if it became legal?

Great. Colorado's doing its best to ban smoking but trying to legalize grass.

Now the ONDCP will come in to organize the campaign to defeat it, and the proponents will get to watch their federal tax dollars subsidize the opposition.

"Amendment 44 would change state law to allow adults age 21 and older to possess or use small amounts of marijuana ... as long as that use doesn’t occur in public."

OK. Got it. Small amounts of marijuana possessed and used at home would be legal. In public, still illegal.

"during the 2005-06 state budget year, state courts convicted 3,700 adults for possession of such amounts of marijuana."

AHA! The implication being that if Amendment 44 is passed, the state would not have to bother with these 3,700 court cases, thereby saving the state time and money on these Mickey Mouse possession cases.

But wait.

Did all these 3,700 cases involve possession AT HOME? I find that very hard to believe. This figure of 3,700 involves ALL possession cases under one ounce, at home or in public.

Question. How many of these 3,700 cases do you honestly believe involved an arrest and conviction for possession of a small amount at home? I'll wager good money it was less than 10. Probably less than 5.

Well whoop dee friggin' do. They're solving a "problem" that isn't a "problem". Not that we should expect honesty from a group like SAFER. Not the group that put up billboards in Denver saying that if the voters passed I-100, domestic violence would be reduced (never telling the voters that I-100 legalized marijuana, marijuana was less likely to induce violence than alcohol, wife beating alcoholics would switch from alcohol to marijuana, and voila!, domestic violence would therefore be reduced).

Probably couldn't fit all that on the billboard.

Ironic how people will say to outlaw pot while in a drunken stupor.

"Denver -- Coloradans are to decide this fall whether to make it legal under state law for anyone age 21 and older to possess up to an ounce of marijuana. "

As if these sheep think they have a choice. Uncle Sam will bust in their door and kill their dog and children first.

I support the measure. I don't see the point in busting small time users. They should go after the big drug dealers and distributors of hard narcotic. Just leave hemp alone!

Why is it when I read arrest reports almost all the people accused of the above are in possession of pot?

The legalization proposal is being pushed by SAFER, an organization that asserts that marijuana is a “Safer Alternative For Enjoyable Recreation” than alcohol.

Bet if you check, you'll find they're getting quiet funding help and practical guidance in getting their initiative on the ballot from ...... Karl Rove.

This is just up Karl's alley. Down-ballot, deniable social issues to bring the conservatives out to vote -- then trap them into voting for his and Shrub's RiNO, Business-Wing candidates.
