Mel Gibson does deal on DUI

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson has escaped jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving.

The 'Mad Max' star agreed a plea bargain with prosecutors on Thursday (17.08.06) and in return was given three years probation, ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and told to enrol in an alcohol abuse programme for three months.

Mel - who was also fined $1,300 and had his driving license restricted for 90 days - was arrested on July 28 after being pulled over on Pacific Coast Highway, in Maui, for speeding.

He then launched into an anti-Semitic tirade, during which he allegedly said: "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

Afterwards, the 50-year-old actor profusely apologised for his comments.

Mel said: "I acted like a persson completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.

"I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologise to anyone who I have offended."

Mel - who signed the plea agreement and waived his right to a jury trial on Monday (14.08.06) - did not appear in court for the hearing. His lawyer Blair Berk entered the plea on his behalf.

Malibu's deputy district attorney Gina Satriano said in a statement: "This was an appropriate outcome which addresses all the public safety concerns of drinking and driving."

The biggest thing I got out of this whole story is a new term for my inner-childish vocabulary.

I don't know if Gibson has priors on the record, but he has confessed publicly to having driven drunk before this incident. He was also going something like 87 mph for this one. He clearly has a long term problem, totally apart from his sick rant. On top of this, he had plenty of opportunity to get a cab when people at the bar suggested that, and he can also afford to have himself chauffered around in a limo that waits for him while he gets drunk in bars -- an option not available to most people.

All of that is legally irrelevant. The law does not take into consideration a man's income in determining the sentence to be imposed. Mr. Gibson was treated exactly as you or I would have been treated by the same court. For some a $1300 fine would be a harsh punishment and for someone like Gibson it is like tipping a waitress for a cup of coffee and a donut.

Obviously he has to kill someone before the courts will do anything to stop him. And yes, appallingly, this is "par for the course", and not just for celebrities.

I suspect that he will not be drinking and driving again any time soon. I trust that he now sincerely acknowledges his problem. The eyes of the world will be upon him and for those who were spiritually touched by his movie on the Passion, I suspect that the prayers of millions will be offered on his behalf.

What you expect from someone and what they are - are 2 different things. When your an alcoholic you will do exactly what he did - outbursts, crazy remarks and such. Unlike the other people you listed Mel Gibson takes responsibility for his actions and faces them (i.e. seeks treatment and is sorry for his outburst). Those other lib crazies blame it on other people, the media and never themselves.

Ayep. Bruce Willis somewhat shuns the label as conservative or Republican, as does Tom Selleck, but they are very conservative in their ideologies. I wonder if they shun it publically for career reasons, although both are well established actors.

They could also use a little spelling help. "enrol?"

Sorry. I looked it up. In the U.K. it's spelled with only one "l"

Maui??? Actually we call it the Honoapiilana Highway not the Pacific Coast Highway.  :-)

Did you see the photos of him getting chummy with the two young ladies in the bar? Not a family man! He also thinks his Anglican wife "might not get into heaven". I guess he pays her to stay married to him. He is insufferable.

Most of the threads about the Duke Lacrosse Rape saga are in Chat.

The entire case is very bizarre. Both of the 'exotic' dancers have records. The one embezzled $25,000 but never did time, never paid it back, and the DA reduced the penalties. The other one had 5 or 6 different er...uh... 'contacts' the days before the event supposedly occurred. She also claimed another gang rape a few years ago and was the one who stole the cabbie's car after giving him a lap dance and stealing his keys. No jail time either. Misdemeanors.

To hear more sordid details go to chat. There is usually a thread going on. A keyword is DukeLax. Another is Nifong - the name of the DA. Fascinating reading.

Mel is not a conservative - he hangs out with Michael Moore and spouts anti-Bush rhetoric. HE should never have been embraced by conservatives: he has cheated on his wife in the past; is an alcoholic; will not stand up to his Old Man - which is probably the source of his alcoholism (unresolved conflict). And I do believe he is an anti-Semite as his father is. He also does not recognize the authority of the Pope. Conservatives embrace him because he opposes gay marriage? so does Fidel Castro!

You say Mel is not a conservative-Oh really and just what does constitute a conservative in your eyes?
He is pro-choice, anti-stem cell use, pro death penalty, pro second amendment, he came out for Terri Schiavvo, he is for lowering taxes. What do you mean he hangs out with Michael Moore? They met one time at the People's Choice Awards?
You say he cheats on his wife?
How do you know this? Oh, perhaps you are the other woman. You must be because you say it so emphatically. It can't be that you just read it in some rag magazine, could it? No, I am sure you would be too smart to just read something in some rag.
Yes, you are correct he is an admitted alcoholic. He is trying to get help for that.
And no, he has not as yet broken the commandment to go against his father, perhaps that would make you happy Julie.

Did you hear the two young ladies in all the interviews? They were fans, they asked him to take pictures, and he said yes. And did you read what they talked about. He talked about his wife and his family and his religion with them. Yeah, he was really getting chummy with them Julie. And why don't you put there what else they said, that he was drinking water the whole time.
Yeah, he has to pay his wife to stay married to him. If she divorced him, she would be worth half a billion dollars. You know Julie, it sounds to me like you are a little jealous.

HE has ranted and raved about Pres. Bush and his latest lousy movie, Apocalipto, is a bomb in the Mayan language, which is supposed to make is think about Iraq! What I am thinking about is what a moron Gibson and his flunkies are! And yes, he is an adulterer. Now, go take a chill pill.
