Mel Gibson does deal on DUI

LIFE STYLE EXTRA (UK) - Mel Gibson has escaped jail after pleading guilty to drunk driving.

The 'Mad Max' star agreed a plea bargain with prosecutors on Thursday (17.08.06) and in return was given three years probation, ordered to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and told to enrol in an alcohol abuse programme for three months.

Mel - who was also fined $1,300 and had his driving license restricted for 90 days - was arrested on July 28 after being pulled over on Pacific Coast Highway, in Maui, for speeding.

He then launched into an anti-Semitic tirade, during which he allegedly said: "Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."

Afterwards, the 50-year-old actor profusely apologised for his comments.

Mel said: "I acted like a persson completely out of control when I was arrested, and said things that I do not believe to be true and which are despicable.

"I am deeply ashamed of everything I said, and I apologise to anyone who I have offended."

Mel - who signed the plea agreement and waived his right to a jury trial on Monday (14.08.06) - did not appear in court for the hearing. His lawyer Blair Berk entered the plea on his behalf.

Malibu's deputy district attorney Gina Satriano said in a statement: "This was an appropriate outcome which addresses all the public safety concerns of drinking and driving."

Deal? Its special treatment. Us regular stiffs wouldn't get a pass like that for a first time DUI. I guess they figured its next to impossible to convict a celebrity. They are god-like to the public.

( No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo!)

My first drunk driving arrest only got me a year of probation and less than $1000 in fines.

You didn't call the judge a Jew Bastard, I'm guessing.

So is Pat Buchanan who is a vicious anti-Semite and Holocaust denier. Now, he is one pro lifer I would not vote for in a million years! There is more to being conservative - AND A DECENT PERSON - than being pro life! (And I happen to be pro life and a decent person, I hope.)

The Gibson defenders will never admit that he is an anti-Semite who does not have the guts to stand up to the old man. Furthermore, I hear that his latest "film" is a total fiasco.

How do you know that is latest movie his lousy? Have you seen it? And how do you know that he is an adulterer? There are only two choices, either you are the woman he is cheating on his wife with? Or you read the National Enquirer? Which is it Julie? I would really like to know. And you know for someone who seems to have so much dislike for Mel Gibson, you certainly know an awful lot about him. It is funny that you brought up dreaming about him?? Mmmmm? Yes Julie, I do think you are jealous. You need to take a chill pill.

Julie, stop reading Page 6 of the New York Post and the National Enquirer for your reading material. You would be much more informed woman. They are not worthy publications to be your info here.

You are absolutley incorrect. My father is a judge in the state of California and that is standard punishment. If anything, Gibson was treated more harshly, BECAUSE he is a celebrity. Don't have a knee jerk reaction.

Veronica,

The female fans who were in the resturant with him the night he was arrested were interviewed by several media outlets, newspapers, television, and they all reported the same thing. That is what he talked about, his wife, his family and his movies. Of course you don't want to believe that.
You know Veronica, you are another woman around here who also sounds like a jilted lover when you speak of Mel Gibson.

He received the lightest sentence allowable for first offense. Anybody convicted for first offense DUI, DWI, and gets that should consider themselves lucky. On the other hand, an OUIL conviction would result in total monetary expense of most likely double that, including jail time up to 90 days (depending on the judge). The judges hands are for the most part tied with respect to minimums. They merely have discretino concerning how severe they desire to be.

What's not included in the picture is

I was never much of a fan of his, so I can't be "jilted." I also thought The Passion of the Christ was anti-semitic, so his antics a few weeks ago was no big surprise to me. He goes to a bar to talk about his wife and his religion?? Color me dubious. :)

According to polls conducted of DWI, DUI, OUIL convicted offenders, prior to their first offense, they have self-admittedly been intoxicated behind the wheel on average 2000 times.

Another thing to keep in mind, that at any particular moment, at least 10% of the vehicles on the road in any arbitrary city, and on any arbitrary road, can be considered having intoxicated operators at the wheel. This number number can be considered significantly much higher from sundown Friday to Monday morning and on holidays.

During the course of one's driving career, if one wears their seat belt each and every time they drive, the likelihood of being injured at least once is virtually guaranteed.

3/5 of all people are involved in an alcohol related automobile accident at some point in their life (this includes innocent victims too).

Of all infant deaths, 1:200 is an alcohol related traffic fatality.

The ratio of alcohol related crash fatalities to firearm deaths of all kinds: 16:10

Every 33 minutes somebody dies from an alcohol related incident.

Every 3 minutes somebody is injured due to an alcohol related incident.

The number of alcohol related traffic fatalities is equivalent to two fully loaded passenger jets crashing every week.
