But they obviously want to join out of choice, so if there was a draft, don't you think they'd keep the fact that they were gay out of registration? That would be the smart thing to do....

It has been tried by heterosexuals as well. Say you're gay and get tossed. It is usually unsuccessful, however, once asked to perform the assid test ;-)
