The audience at a Muslim rally today were told that dying for your beliefs was "just" and the "greatest act of martyrdom".
Dr Azzam Tamimi, a firebrand Islamic academic and self-styled Hamas sympathiser, claimed he is prepared to become a suicide bomber.
An 8,000 strong crowd in Manchester were told that Tony Blair and George Bush were not pursuing a path which was "just and fair". He said the government was attempting to make the war on terrorism a war on Islam.
Dr Tamimi, 51, was speaking at the ExpoIslamia convention at the Manchester Evening News Arena.
The Palestinian, who now lives in London, denied Hamas was a terrorist group, despite it being banned in the UK.
He said: "The greatest act of martyrdom is standing up for what is true and just.
"Martyrs are those who stand up and stand up in defiance of George Bush and Tony Blair.
"You stand up to them and you say desist. Stop this injustice. Stop this oppression.
"We are Muslims in Europe, not European Muslims.
"Being fair and just means finding the middle path.
"The middle path is not rubbing shoulders with Tony Blair and George Bush.
"They say we are in difficult times. I tell you, we are in the best of times. We must just have confidence in ourselves.
"Just stand up and defend what is right."
The crowd erupted with cheering and applause when he said that Israel had been defeated by Hezbollah.
He continued: "Hamas is making sacrifices for you.
"We tell this government Hamas is not a terrorist group. It is elected by the people of Palestine.
"We are not terrorists. We are defenders of the truth.
"Fighting those who invade Muslims is a just cause.
"The government is trying to turn the war on terror into the war on Islam."
Dr Tamimi had previously said, during the course of a BBC interview, that he was prepared to be a suicide bomber if the opportunity arose.
Today's day-long convention featured a number of high profile Muslim speakers, including the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Britain, Dr Muhammad Abdul Bari and former Sunday Express journalist, Yvonne Ridley, a Muslim convert who recently upset Jewish groups with her comments on Israel.
It was the fifth time the ExpoIslamia convention has been held in the UK.
Don't think for a minute there are not Muslims just as fanatical in the U.S. There are just more of them in Europe.

The Muslims are not killing themselves because of Blair and Bush. This is just a convenient excuse. They die for Allah, fighting against non- Muslims of any stripe;thereby, according to their Islamic beliefs gaining paradise.
Muslims killing infidels is not about people, or politics, or poverty or grievances or country or family: it is about doing what God(Allah) wants done according to the Koran and Hadiths so they can attain paradise.
These infidel killers will have the support of the so- called moderate Muslims because the moderates know deep down the killers are doing the right thing, and the moderates haven't the guts to do it yet, so they can't openly disown those who kill for Islam.
But the moderates can at least provide for a community in Infidel countries for the Islamic fundamentalists to hide in. They do this by emigrating to Infidel lands. Heretical Muslins who disagree with the fundamentalists and speak out, will get killed just like us Infidels. - Tom

I am confident that the only reason they are not deported or "missing" is that they are all under surveillance; better to let them run their mouths thinking the Brits are sissies, all the while giving up their international links and contacts.

I dont know what it takes to be considered an academic. This guy doesnt sound too bright to me if he is ready to commit suicide and become a half assed martyr for a half assed religion.
We are Muslims in Europe , not European Muslims pretty much says it all. There is no such thiing as a moderate muslim, just muslims who havent strapped on their belts yet.
The US is a country of immigrants, Immigrants who came here to become Americans. If that isnt your plan you should GTF out. If you are a guest worker with plans on working and going home, thats fine , Do it legally and dont expect us to speak your language or allow you to drive around with no insurance

Exactly what 'injustice and oppression' is he speaking of.
Oh, never mind, he must mean the 'injustice and oppression' that Muslims inflict on Christians, Jews and various other faiths and that 'homicide' bombers are their version of what is 'just and fair'.
