BOULDER, Colo. -- It was shocking when authorities arrested a suspect last week in the JonBenet Ramsey killing, but in some ways, it's more surprising that it didn't happen years ago.
John Mark Karr, the 41-year-old schoolteacher who has said he was with JonBenet when she died in 1996, tangled with California authorities five years ago after telling an acquaintance that he broke into the Ramsey house the night of the slaying.

Another strange twist.
He stated he picked up Jon Benet during Christmas time at school when school was not in session.
He also stated that he drugged Jon Benet although the autopsy didn't show any trace of drugs.
The story that never dies...
i'm not convinced he did it.
Me neither, I think he befriended the killer(s) and got all the dirt on what happened.
Makes me hate cable news--stop giving this freak any attention, any print, andy broadcast. If he did it smoke his sick perverted a$$ and be done with it. Oh and please do not allow any media coverage of the trial, or the execiution.
Those statements were later clarified as having come from the Thai guy who was speaking to the press...mistakes in his interpretation.
Thanx for posting this article. I posted a link to it on another thread, thinking it ought to have wider exposure.
I thought that the statements about the drugging and school pick-up were what Thai authorities said Karr told them. The Thai authorities later recanted those atatements.
Agreed. He was more likely the QB for the Steelers in last year's Super Bowl game...... than at that house that night in '96.
Numerous news articles in the last week have had the Thai retractions in them.
What was really strange was this...http://www.nypost.com/seven/08212006/news/nationalnews/jonbenet_creep_flies_high___until_doors_slam_in_u_s__jail_regionalnews_andrew_drummond_in_bangkok_and_jocelyn_gecker_aboard_thai______airways_flight_794_to_los_angeles.htm
In the afternoon, Suwat and a phalanx of other Thai officials led Karr - who was not handcuffed or shackled - out of the immigration center.
But beforehand, Karr engaged in an odd, impromptu duet of the Bee Gees song with Suwat, who since Karr's arrest has become the lead Thai spokesman in the case.
First, Suwat sang the opening lyrics of "Words," made famous by the pop trio.
"Smile an everlasting smile, a smile can bring you near to me," he warbled. "Don't ever let me find you down, 'cause that would bring a tear to me."
Then Karr joined in.
"This world has lost its glory, let's start a brand-new story now, my love," Karr sang wistfully.
Both men then sang in unison.
"You think that I don't mean a single word I say. It's only words, and words are all I have to take your heart away," crooned the cop-creep duo.
Suwat later said Karr "enjoyed the sing-song. I enjoyed his company.
"But he [Karr] said he preferred Chopin," Suwat said.
That, according to a Thai official who has since backtracked and supposedly stated that he was recalling something he had seen in a documentary.
Didn't his ex-wife state that Karr was in Alabama all Christmas Holiday with her?
Linkee no workee.
He also said he was drinking at the Ramsey's Christmas party, that his brother worked for the Ramsey's, that he hid under a bed in the house and came back in through a storm window. The party was three days before the crime, so that doesn't work. There was a spider web over the storm window, so that doesn't work. The guest list for the party and photos don't have any indication that he was there, so that doesn't work.
It looks to me like he may have researched the case, but didn't commit the crime.
Linkee workee...I justee tested iteee... ;)
