Kim Jong-il to Visit China around Aug. 28

From multiple sources from China and Japan... wonder if it is about nuclear test

[2006-08-23 11:30]

Multiple sources informed us that N. Korean leader Kim Jong-il is due to visit China around Aug. 28.

Chinese diplomatic sources told us in the morning of Aug 23, "Currently senior figures of N. Korean military are staying in China as an advance to

team for Kim Jong-il's visit, doing necessary preparations." However, the exact date is not revealed.

The sources said, "It is our understanding that these senior military figures are working on his visit schedule which can minimize exposure to

public, and necessary security measures."

The sources speculated that the upcoming visit is about the nuclear test (of N. Korea.)

China's leadership are feeling the sense of crisis from possible N. Korean nuclear test. To preempt the test, they asked Kim Jong-il over to China,

and intend to dissuade Kim Jong-il from going ahead with the test, according to their analysis. If so, it is quite likely that President Hu Jintao would

send an official (or unofficial) invitation to Kim Jong-il and personally try to persuade him.

U.S. President G.W. Bush telephoned (Chinese) President Hu Jintao on Aug. 21, and asked him to warn Kim Jong-il to stop developing nuclear

weapons, amid N. Korean movements toward its nuclear test.

There is another theory that the visit is related to Kim Jong-il's illness. Kim Jong-il has been treated for his heart ailment. Some say that recently his

kidney condition went bad, and diabetic complication is showing up. He looks markedly sick.

Legislator Chung Hyong-geun of (opposition) Hannara Party claimed last April, "According to my intelligence source, during Kim Jong-il's secret visit

to China last January, he is treated at a clinic inside China's Space Center in Beijing."

Diplomatic sources in Japan also said, "We received intelligence that Kim Jong-il is to visit China in late August. This may be the occasion where Kim

Jong-il will personally convey his intention to proceed with the nuclear test."

The sources argued, "As we have seen from the missile launch episode, Kim Jong-il grasp on international situation is seriously handicapped.

Even when China is on board for (UN) resolution against N. Korea, he appears to be intent on one last gamble against U.S., using his nuclear card."

(S. Korean) government officials, when asked about Kim's possible visit, responded, "We are aware of such information, but it has not yet been

verified."

Maybe China should hang on to him, not let him go back.

Hm... knowing the MSS, I'm wondering if Kimmy's train will suffer a horrible accident on the way back to NK. Perhaps some old railway bridge will mysteriously collapse under the weight of the armored train.

Showdown? Nope, IMHO, more likely just giving him his latest marching orders.

And just how can China persuade N. Korea not to test? They already offered him food and he kept the trains. Who can take anything Kim says serious?

FYI (I heard this on a discussion of International Trade on C-Span over the weekend): South Korea wants to ship us goods (under South Korea's favorable trading status) made in North Korea.
