p.s.

I recently saw Kevin Spacey on DVD in Long Day's Journey into Night. Probably the best Jamie I've ever seen. More than makes up for American Beauty in my book.

Magnolia is a bizzare movie, but I actually thought the small Tom Cruise part was pretty good. He may be a lunatic, but I for one find most of his movies entertaining. He has an undeniable track record of solid efforts:

Minority Report - very good
The Firm - very good
Collateral - good
Mission Impossible (The first one) - good
A Few Good Men - good
All the Right Moves - Good
Risky Business - very good
Interview with a Vampire - ok
Top Gun - yes over the top and campy, but still good
Born on the Fourth of July - ok

Legend - horrible
Eyes Wide Shut - horrible
Days of Thunder - not horrible, but not good either
Mission Impossible 2 nd 3 - 2 sucked, didn't see 3(heard it sucked)

I'm sure I'm missing a few, but overall it's still a good record for an actor who's been in the top tier for 20 years or so. Maybe the only guys with better track records are Harrison Ford or Tom Hanks...but even they make a clunker here and there.

I'm like you though, I don't believe that for a second. In fact, Alec Baldwin was on SNL a few years ago, and one of the skits I remember from that show was when he played a part of a homosexual Scout master on a camping trip with one Boy Scout member (Adam Sandler), which ironically happend when the Boy Scouts kicked out homosexual Scout Masters from their ranks.

I saw MI3, it was not a good movie. Watching Mr. Cruise's fine backside was pleasant, but not pleasant enough to see the movie again, nor to buy the dvd.

What'd you think of his newly misshapen nose? When the movie opened and showed that closeup of his face, I saw his nose and assumed it was because he had just been beated and tortured. But, alas, that's now his "normal" nose. I find that so sad: Someone like that who has everything the world can possibly offer, and it's not enough. Heck, even his superduperscientology apparently isn't enough to provent contentment with himself. Perhaps one day he'll find the REAL way to fill that void. I pray he does.

I think you missed Vanilla Sky and the sports agent movie...

Magnolia is a very big budget ensemble "art film."

Cruise has probably added a couple billion dollars to corporate coffers over his career. But think about it, even a couple billion doesn't get you loyalty in Hollywood.

Out of that list, Jack Nicholson has proven himself to be a very versatile actor. Even when he's playing the serious part or the part of the crazed loon like the character in The Shining, it can sometimes be funny. I happened to watch The Shining for the first time in years on TNT, and I found my self laughing myself silly with some of the lines Jack had in that movie.

If you want to see how an actor really works, watch A Few Good Men and As Good as It gets back to back. When you watch them close together you can see all the actor tricks -- body language, speech patterns, etc. etc. It's pretty cool.

I think it's dumb when liberals openly mock morality.

LOL! Both of those movies have classic lines in them, and Nicholson delivers them flawlessly.

I never saw Vanilla Sky (heard it was weird and bad). I did forget about Jerry MacGuire(SP?). That was ok, a very profitable chick-flick overall.

I don't think his career is over by any means. Tons of people in Hollywood are strange...but it's always about the dollars. He makes money.

Oh yeah, just thought of another: War of the Worlds. That was pretty good and it made over $600 mill world-wide. Not too shabby.

"His recent conduct has not been acceptable to Paramount."

That is just the official reason. The real reason is that Paramount is getting fed up with the increasingly large chunk of cash that Cruise walks away with leaving very little for the studios(25m + % of gross). From what I have read Cruise made $100m from MI3, and couple that with the poor opening weekend and overall weak performance, its enough to piss off any studio exec.

I once asked a pretty good actor how he did a certain thing in a role. Basically the way he handled stuff -- coffee cup, pencil, etc. -- and he said (and I quote precisely) "I dunno, I just do it." They spend so much time practicing acting, thinking about the role, etc. etc. all the actor stuff comes without them even thinking about it too much.
