Looks like Allen did call the guy directly to apologize today too.
Allen Apologies To S.R. Sidarth
Hours before President Bush was scheduled to attend a fundraiser in his honor, Sen. George Allen telephoned Democratic video tracker S.R. Sidarth to apologize.
The news was buried at the bottom of a press release issued by James Webb's campaign.
Wed, Aug. 23: Twelve Days Later, After Numerous Excuses and Apologies to Everyone But Sidarth, Senator Allen Calls S.R. Sidarth to Apologize. [Phone call, 8/23/06]

Frickin' wimp. I really get pissed when republicans appologize for remarks. Stand by your beliefs or keep your mouth shut. Calling someone a name like Macaca, or what ever it was, doesn't call for an appology. The republicans fall for that crap every time.

Gotta hand it to them. The liberals are BRILLIANT.They succeeded in getting liberals more in tune with the election to turn Mr. Allen out of office.
More importantly, THEY SUCCEEDED IN GETTING CONSERVATIVES TO TURN AGAINST MR. ALLEN, IN FORUMS SUCH AS RIGHT HERE ON F.R. AND ELSEWHERE.
Brilliant. Absolutely brilliant.
Let's keep on piling on Senator Allen. After all that is what the liberals want us to do and we have to be obedient you know. They want us in an internecine, reactionary mode, rather than united, backing up one of our own (see voting record) and going on the offensive.

This is paralleling the Lott apologies fiasco from Strom Thurman's birthday celebration.
Give one real apology, then STFU, Senator Allen.

Pardon my ignorance, but I saw the tape yesterday on Fox. I've never even heard of the term "macaca" -- can anyone explain to me how, and if, it's a slur? If it is, what's it on a par with?

I won't be happy until he puts on an brilliant ivory evening gown, goes to Poplar Forest, stands in the necessary and sings the apology to the tune of Terri Jack's "Seasons In The Sun".
The outdoor necessary by the road, not the one indoors and certainly not the one near the kitchen.

Stop it Senator. These liberal A-holes will never let you off the hook. Either don't say this stuff or stick by your guns when you do.
To: Blackirish
I don't know much about politics, but I do know that you never go on the defensive like this.
He should call the guy. Then turn around and attack Webb for something.

I agree, he should knock it off. That said, I thought it was a bizarre thing to say, and I actually didn't even see it as a racist insult. I thought he was annoyed but was actually looking for another word (although I have no idea where he got "macaca" from, since to my knowledge, it's not a common insult in the US).
Allen was clearly annoyed, in any case, and I think if somebody has that thin a skin, he needs to go out and develop a thicker one. GWB will occasionally take on press folks who are regular idiots at press conferences, but in general, he's pretty un-provocable. Unfortunately, that's how you have to be, and I hope that Allen learns this.

I don't think he had to apologize at all, an explanation was all that was needed in this case.
"He called that man a macaca!"
"A what?
"A macaca! It's a type of monkey but he DID say he meant it as something else. He's such a racist!"
"Yeah, whatever..."

This is why he's not presidential material. Last time was when the picture of the Confederate flag came out he ended up saying we needed an official Congressional apology for slavery. He'll to anything to react to how the press attacks him. He's not strong enough.
Go Newt '08.
