Collins calls Harris 'defective,' touts Navy, business experience

JUNO BEACH — LeRoy Collins Jr. — a retired two-star admiral and son of the man considered Florida's first modern governor — tells audiences he's best known now as "one of the guys running against Katherine Harris."

Collins, 71, of Tampa, used that line Wednesday as he addressed about 60 people at the Waterford retirement community in Juno Beach.

"Everybody knows who Katherine Harris is, and a lot of those reasons are the wrong reasons," said Collins, one of three candidates running against Harris in the Republican primary for the U.S. Senate nomination.

Harris, a two-term Republican from Longboat Key, gained national notoriety for her role as Florida's secretary of state during the 2000 election. In the past year, her tumultuous Senate campaign has been marked by incessant staff turnover, low poll numbers, low fund-raising totals and reports that federal investigators are probing her ties to a convicted defense contractor.

You just gotta admire a man - a 71 year old man at that - who jumped in a bitter Senate race an hour and a half before the filing deadline to challenge an established, conservative elected official that FL voters already know and trust.

I mean, really. One has to wonder why Collins didn't use his newfound energy into running for elective office, say 20 or even 10 years ago. Surely he could have challenged Lawton Chiles for Governor, or perhaps ran against Nelson six years ago. Yeah, why didn't he run against Nelson six years ago? The evil Harris wasn't in the race; why, she was merely saving Candidate George Bush's behind from the Sore/Loserman election hijacking.

Nope, the mean-old Harris (cue the Cruella de Ville image and cackling laughter) is PREVENTING anyone from running against her. Here's what her critics are basically saying: "Waaaa, waaa...we demand Harris step aside because we can't beat her in the GOP primary. It's not fair."

As far as I can tell, her role was minor. She simply signed the certification that says one number is greater than another number.

Collins refused to answer all but one question on the Christian Coalition Questionaie......that signals to me that he's a RINO!

He also said that he thinks abortion should remain legal up to the third trimester.

Ganted he's served well in the US Navy but he's 71 and has said he'll only serve one term. He doesn't have the fight to take on the rabid Senate Bluedog Dems....Katherine has the 'fighting spirit' to do that.

Don't believe the polls or the liberal FL press that always tried to assist the Dems.

With the GOP base behind her she can squeak into the Senate just like Martinez did.

It was minor. Now Al Gore fought to keep hundreds of military absentee votes from counting and thats kept quiet. Wonder why we don't hear more about that from the MSM. hmmm I wonder....

The same reason we only hear about how bad Katherine Harris is all the time in the liberal news media...They have an agenda and her role was still just a Little more than minor...If you could listen to a liberal friend of mine she stole the election for Bush..LOL

Excellent, my dear EEE.

Collins has pulled a major political gaffe. His neophyte-ism and the dumbness of his advisors is mind-boggling. The senate is no place for this man.

By announcing he's a one-termer, he cuts himself off at the knees. He won't wield any influence in the Senate, his peers won't pay the slightest attention to him, and he won't be able to do a dang thing for Florida.

If he should win the primary, he'll go in as a lame duck. If he wins in the general, he'll be a dead duck.

But that's major league hardball politics, fellow Floridians.

Because the left will use any excuse to generate hate for a Republican! You're giving the left waaaay to much credit, as if they can be counted on to give a fair assessment to an issue.

I should have put sarcasm after my statement but I did put an LOL....I never ever take my friend serious about politics...He thinks Jimmy Carter was a great President and man...Now how can you take that serious..Actually it is sad...But then again he was in the Union in Michigan and they still blame a former Republican Gov for all of Michigan's problems despite the fact they have both US Senators and the Gov's office..The major cities with Democratic Mayors..Yeps its the Republicans fault the state is in bad shape..Thank god we elect conservatives in our district here...Katherine Harris...Never ever let us down yet..
