FDA approves Plan B emergency contraception
GrandForksHerald.com ^ | 8/25/06 | Marie McCullough/The Philadelphia Inquirer

The Food and Drug Administration Thursday approved nonprescription sales of emergency contraception to women 18 and over, capping a long, tortuous saga about public health, politics and morality..........

Over-the-counter Plan B will be only in pharmacies, only from pharmacists, only to women with proof of age.......

Reaction was swift and polarized.

Women's health advocates and medical organizations had endorsed Barr's original 2003 application for over-the-counter sales without an age restriction. Thursday they applauded the FDA's ruling, but said it was long overdue, unneccessarily restrictive, and shaped by political pressure.......

Conservative political and religious groups decried the FDA's decision, contending that easier access.....will increase promiscuity, sexually-transmitted disease, and give rapists a way to eliminate evidence.......

Some anti-abortion groups also denounced Plan B as an abortion pill........

"It is no secret that Plan B is a deadly drug that.....can act to take the life of newly conceived babies in the days immediately following fertilization," said Judie Brown, president of American Life League........

the FDA delayed a decision.

That, in turn, infuriated U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Hillary Clinton, Democrats from Washington and New York repsectively, who blocked a confirmation vote on former FDA commissioner Lester Crawford until he promised quick action on Plan B.

He abruptly quit last Septmeber-without taking action.

Thursday, in a deja vu moment, Murray and Clinton said they would no longer block a confirmation vote on Crawford's replacment, acting FDA commissioner Andrew von Eschenbach...........

This story mentions the political aspect of this that I find as interesting as the media campaign to call this a contraceptive even though they admit it works after fertilization (can cause a micro-abortion).

Hillary Clinton used her power as a senator (along with Patty Murray) to hold up the FDA commissioner nomination. The White House caving in to allow over the counter sale of Plan B did the trick with Hillary and she now won't object.

I don't like the White House spin about this at all with the 18 year-old thing. That rule will be bent easily and there won't even be tougher enforcement like there is for the 18 year-old cigarette sales restriction.

The White House doesn't run the FDA directly.

Plan B the Bush. How can I possibly defend him when this is supported.

What will people say when 80% of sales are to men, and it starts to get slipped into women's morning (after) coffee?

Will the impulse of the MSM be to bash the males, or to sweep it under the rug since it's "only a clump of cells" being destroyed?

Sorry to be so flippant but I get disgusted . . .

No, the White House doesn't run the FDA, directly. But guess who picked the head? GW is looking more and more like the lame duck that he has CHOSEN to become.

This just makes me sick.... and where is the WH outrage? Of course there is none. If GW truly believed the trash he has told us for the last decade (even pre-POTUS days), he would have been adamantly against Plan B, particularly OTC distribution.

Is this another example of "Compassionate Conservativism"? Because if it is - the RNC can go to HE11.....

A major victory for the left - and the fake "conservatives" can't even find a way to defend themselves in a believable manner.

The one positive note is that while this might not be what many wanted, it could be the beginning of the end of abortion clinics. And i'll take plan B any day if it causes the $600 million a year abortion clinics to go out of business. Chalk it up to one of those good intentions with bad consequences type of things with regards to the clinics.

When a woman has her leags up in the air, the suction so loud, she can't help but think of the procedure being done. It will be with her the rest of her life. Many fall into depression afterwards. She may try to deny it, may try to forget it, but the vision and sound of what she did will be there knocking on her conscience.

We've finally found a way to bypass the things that trigger the conscience. The remembrance if any, will be the equivalent to remembering the last time she took an aspirin.

This is not a good thing at all.

It will follow that rape victims will be given the abortion pill as a routine part of the after-rape examination at the Emergency Rooms....so abortion will be effected within 72 hours of the attack. That's where it's going....it will be part of the "rape kit"

Plan B is an attempt to replace Plan A (Surgical Abortion) with an early chemical abortion. It doesn't always cause an abortion, but it does in some cases when it works after fertilization.

Don't let the liberals say Plan B isn't an abortion. That's part of the propaganda campaign that has been waged for years over this.

Hillary Clinton got what she wanted, too.

And Bush caved on it, make no mistake.

You're way behind the curve. Been done for years.

News to me. I thought the after-pill was NOT available? What was the approved drug you are talking about called, and who produced it?

Abortion it is. But now with less guilt.

We've come from the days of laying a newborn on the alter, then driving a knife through its heart, sacrificing it to the god of Molech, to...

Going to an alley with a coat hanger, poking and slicing the infant while still in the womb, sacrificing it to the god of selfishness, to...

Going to a 'doctor', who will help remove some of the guilt by calling it a 'medical procedure', as he shoves a vacuum tube in a womans uterus to suck the unborn into a canister for later disposal in a garbage dumpster, all for the god of self-centeredness, to...

Waking up the next day and taking a pill, no trauma, very little to remind, no big mess, early enough so she won't see the little one in her menstration, all for the "god of this age".

This was inevitable.

Those saying it wasn't are denying reality. Ever since Roe v. Wade a stone has been rolling down hill which will never be stopped.

I'm very pro-life, but that doesn't blind me to the harsh, sickening reality. Abortion will always be legal in this country until there is some kind of right-wing revolution and another constitutional congress, which I doubt will happen in my lifetime.

Then you must be against any sort of birth control?

This is just a bigger dose of the regular birth control pill. If the egg has not come down through the tube it prevents it. If it has come down the tube it prevents the sperm from penetrating the egg. That is the same as ordinary birth control If the egg has been fertilized it keeps it from attaching to the wall.

If the egg does get attached to the wall the woman is pregnant. There are no side effects... no more than if a woman gets pregnant while on the pill.

That is exactly what birth control pills do already. This is just a bigger dose for those people who have not been taking birth control pills

This is just a Birth Control Pill in a slightly bigger dose. It is exactly the same chemical.

I find the idea that a baby was "the evidence" of a rape, that could be disposed of by forcing women to take the morning-after pill. I don't believe in a "rape" exception for abortion, but the idea that we need to make sure raped women get pregnant so we can have "evidence" against the rapist seems a bit overblown.

I imagine a lot of women on the pill get raped, and we seem to have evidence to convict them. After all, if they left sperm to get the woman pregant, we have the DNA evidence we need to convict them. We don't need a baby.

It already is, since plan b is already legal by prescription, and at the hospital the doctor will prescribe the pill. (except at catholic hospitals where they won't prescribe the pill. Those hospitals were under great pressure because of their beliefs, and this FDA ruling will remove that pressure because the women can just pick up the pill at the local pharmacy. So the catholic and religious hospitals won't have to violate laws to uphold their religious principles).
