U.S. border governors urge Congress to pass immigration reform

AUSTIN — Accusing Congress of abdicating its responsibility to control immigration and secure the U.S.-Mexico border, the governors of four border states signed a letter on Friday urging federal lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform before the end of the year.

Democrats Janet Napolitano of Arizona and Bill Richardson of New Mexico and Republicans Rick Perry of Texas and Arnold Schwarzenegger of California signed the letter at the close of the two-day Border Governors Conference.

They also joined the governors of six Mexican states in signing a joint declaration on issues ranging from tourism and trade to education and border security. Among other things, they pledged to share information about human, drug and arms trafficking and to work together to prevent agricultural terrorism and ensure high food safety standards.

U.S. House and Senate have yet to begin working out the differences between immigration reform legislation passed earlier this year.

House GOP leaders convened a series of hearings this summer after the Senate approved a guest worker program and a possible path to citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants. The House-approved bill focuses on enforcement and has no provision for illegal immigrants or future guest workers.

The hearings have been criticized as a political maneuver to delay immigration legislation and to help Republican candidates in an election year.

In their letter to House Speaker Dennis Hastert and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, the governors said such hearings "do little but stir the pot of discontent."

I would take this a lot more seriously when at least one of those governors cleans up his own act.

I seem to recall that in at least on of those states it's illegal for state employees to ask for proof of citizenship, so illegals can obtain drivers licenses, benefits and register to vote unhindered.

I seem to recall that in at least one of those states illegals can obtain state benefits, including aide, medical care and schooling for their children.

Don't put all the blame on the feds when you're putting out the welcome mat and sending out invitations.

Good post. I guess they are whining about the feds being unable to put out the fires they helped start.

Our "leaders" don't seem to be able to make decisions that affect Americans without asking Mexico what they think about it, and then, they act on their recommendations. No surprise about Richardson because he's half Mexican. This is the man who wants to be our President. He should move to Mexico and become their leader. We in NM would appreciate that very much. Anything!! Just get him out of our wallets. ;o)

After 200 years of being the great "melting pot", we have now become the "pot of discontent".LOLOLOL No one could have said this better than Bill Richardson, Schwarzenegger and Rick Perry.

It wonder if they talked about how they were having their conference in a 'safe haven' city that protects illegals from immigration questions...

That's the thing. The fed's might as well not even waste their time as long as the states/cities/counties are offering a free ride with full benefits. The only way that any sort of reform will work is if the states/cities/counties ALSO stop making themselves illegal friendly.

Filing for anything in those states should include proof of citizenship; no school, no driver's license, no aid, no medical care (except emergency services) without proof of citizenship.

Those wily local officials and the MSM. An interesting juxtaposition:

Accusing Congress of abdicating its responsibility to control immigration and secure the U.S.-Mexico border, the governors of four border states signed a letter on Friday urging federal lawmakers to pass comprehensive immigration reform before the end of the year.

Interesting because of the meaning behind the code words we've come to understand and tolerate.

1) abdicating responsibility to control immigration and the U.S.-Mexico border = enforcing existing federal immigration code and the policy of regulated immigration upon which they are based.

2) pass comprehensive immigration reform = changing existing code to end regulated immigration and effectively open our borders (regulated, unregulated immigration).

Using Mary to meet her sister. Feigning support for enforcement of existing immigration policies to achieve the opposite: open borders

Yep. He already was once. I kinda thought Hillary might ask him to be her vice prez. He'd bring the Mexican vote to her.

Maybe I should send an e-mail to my Congressman; suggest he and the rest of Congress send an open letter to the four governors demanding that they stop offering illegals a guaranteed better life then they have at home then get back to Congress.
