El Salvador announced on Friday that it would relocate its embassy in Israel from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv.
The Central American country became the only country in the world with an embassy in Israel's capital on August 16, when Costa Rica announced it was moving its embassy to Tel Aviv.
El Salvador's foreign ministry issued a statement saying that the decision was made in light of the present situation in the Middle East.
Israel annexed eastern Jerusalem after capturing it from Jordan in the 1967 Six Day War and claims all of the city as its capital. The Palestinians want to establish their capital in the eastern sector of the city. Most countries don't recognize the annexation of east Jerusalem.
El Salvador established its embassy in Jerusalem in 1984. Costa Rica moved its embassy to Jerusalem in 1982 under then-president Luis Alberto Monge, leading the nations of the Arab League to break off relations with Costa Rica.
Considering Nasty Nasrallah wanted to hit that particular city, this shows that the El Salvador government does not have the brightest lights south of the Rio Grande.
I disagree. El Salvador is one of the sanest Latin American countries and it is definitely the sanest in Central America.
"El Salvador... [is one of the] sanest in Central America."
Totally unrelated to this thread but I'm wondering how you came to that conclusion. I've lived in Central America and El Salvador would not be my pick of the litter.
Based on their recent changes. Standardizing on the dollar, electing a capitalistic president, and contributing forces in Iraq. El Salvador is a country that is going somewhere in the future, unlike so many others (like Venezuela).
Moving in the middle of a Bullseye isn't the smartest thing to do.
It's an issue since Jerusalem is Israel's capital. All embassies, including the US, belong in Jerusalem.
USA has long promised to move the embassy to Jerusalem. This has not been done because of fear of Arab uprisings.
Search google for this, for it is an old story.
In terms of nations picking which cities they recognize as a countries capital city, it would be like foreign governments placing their embassies in Baltimore in relation to Washington D.C.
US President George W. Bush, who promised during his first presidential campaign to start relocating the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem as soon as he took office, has postponed the move for another six months, citing national security.
"My administration remains committed to beginning the process of moving our embassy to Jerusalem," he said in a statement issued Wednesday. The Jerusalem Embassy Act of 1995 obligated the US to move its embassy to Jerusalem by May 31, 1999, but allows the president to delay the move every six months.
What is the American government's stance on Jerusalem, and is their embassy also in Tel Aviv?
A closer analogy would be NY City? Isn't Tel Aviv the biggest city in Israel?
El Salvador...The Savior...moves His house away from Jerusalem to a nearby city...well isn't this a lovely surprise? God is about to appear, IMHO.
The American government's stance is that they will immediately move their embassy to Jerusalem, the eternal capitol of Israel, as of 2000. Film at eleven.
The United States could hurry up and move. There could be some riots, but it would be a strong sign of solidarity.
Clearly you are the one with the less than brightest light!
Now you made me spit my coffee on my brand new laptop...that's the funniest thing I've read on FR...it was a joke wasn't it?
