Possible plane crash in Lexington, KY. My brother works security for Lexington UK Hospital and was just called in. No news locally or on major news outlets yet. I didn't want to post anything for fear of being wrong, but he's still waiting for an official call while on stand-by.

Update from WTVQ 36 Lexington:

A plane has crashed near the Blue Grass Airport this morning. No word on details at this time. We are told it was a commercial aircraft. Versailles Road is blocked as emergency vehicles circle around the site. We have live coverage beginning at 7:20am. Stay with Action News 36 for more details.

Oh, man. I did my student teaching at Tates Creek on the south side of Lexington and have some relatives in the area. Praying.

Whoever made that map is clueless. The Bluegrass Parkway ends in Elizabethtown, not Bowling Green. They're about 40 miles apart on I-65.

About 30 minutes ago FOX reported 50 dead- they've backed off that and now say not going to speculate on numbers.

Lightning is seldom the cause of an aircraft failure. In any large release of energy the flash preceeds the bang. Speed of light is much faster than the speed of sound.

I have a co-worker who works out of her home in Versailles. Her husband flies a lot. I don't think he would have been on that one!

But it's far more important that we don't offend Arabs by not checking every single one for dangerous items. Security need to waste their time on all those white people as well.

What?

If you ever flew into Lexington from the North, you know that the approach brings you over those beautiful horse farms and then Keeneland racetrack, then finally very low over Versailles Road, hwy 60, immediately before the wheels touch down.

It wasn't too many years ago that a flight came in a few feet too low and slammed into a stone fence then plowed across Versailles Road. If this flight was taking off toward the North, then it is probably on Keeneland property or in a horse pasture.

Prayers for all onboard and for the families.

MSNBC has local WLEX reporter in the area, but no pictures from their location near the airport.

http://www.wlextv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5331035 The FAA is reporting that an Atlanta-bound Comair jet with up to 50 people on board has crashed on takeoff at Blue Grass Airport, and that there are "significant casualties." MSNBC is reporting that all 50 aboard have died. Details are still very sketchy, but it appears that the plane, Comair flight 5191 bound for Atlanta, crashed at 6:07 a.m. into a field near the airport. An eyewitness told LEX 18 that he heard a large boom, then saw a bright flash of light. Stay tuned to LEX 18 for the latest information on this developing situation.

KLEX is built up on a hill top... lots of optical Illusions when landing 22... including the longitudinal turtle-back in the runway surface...

If I recall... isn't Versailles road on the north field boundary?

If the eyewitness is correct about the boom before the flash of light, that's disturbing.

You may need to coffee up. I took that comment as sarcasm w/o the tag.

I took it to mean that the boom was the plane contacting the ground, and the flash was a fuel fire triggered seconds later.
