at 6am in Lexington there would have been no other deaprting or arriving traffic, so permission to cross may have been cursory.

The future pilot stream will come from University Flight Programs like PURDUE, ND State and others...

I said some wouldn't like what I said. These places teach flying just fine. Unlike the military, they don't also teach thinking, nor do they focus on emergency procedures like the Military does.

Clear day, VFR, your grandma could fly most aircraft.

Bad weather, crosswinds, sick engines or hydraulics, you had better hope the dudes up front have already seen worse.

I am in upper East Tennessee. Six a.m. dawn is about breaking. Sky is getting white - not black.

Then I wonder if the other runway's lights were still on? If so, why take off from the unlit runway?

He declined to mention any names simply for that fact. No official release of a passenger manifest has been made public yet.

ATC tapes and the flight data recorder will tell the story

The local station is reporting, via Bob Orr of CBS news, that they do just that, and it's confirmed that the wrong runway was used. "Unnamed sources" warning.

Absolutely. The clearance was likely, "Comair 191, taxi to runway 22.", which would have implied a crossing of runway 26. Only had the controller added, "hold short of runway 26" would the pilot have had to stop there.

If true, the controller is in big, big trouble. That is an incomprehensible error.

Let me be clear on this, I am not putting down civilian flight schools. I am only pointing out that they have a different agenda. Outside the military, it is very difficult to evaluate how someone is going to respond during an emergency situation because candidates are not competing with each other, but only with the curriculum. They have a checklist of stuff you have to learn, and when you learn it, you are good to go. They don't put you through the things that determine your character during an in-flight emergency. Sure, you sim all that stuff, but tell me this, how many civilian flight schools are going to take their students to FL400, shut down the engines, roll it on its back and say, "ok, you've got it"? If they do air-starts, I doubt they shut all engines off. You just don't get the pressures that separate the good from the marginal. That is all I am saying, and I am not putting down commercial aviation.

Both have their positives and negatives. However, it is very hard to substantiate that the military teaches "thinking" and "emergency procedures," better than a reputable commercial aviation program.

I acknowledge & respect your insight on this... but from an uninformed civilian's point of view...

.. I always liked the Delta Connection commuter flights from Melbourne or Orlando to Atlanta.....and vice versa.

For some reason, they felt safer....and I knew it would take under an hour to reach my designation.

So today's news is extra sad....the poor souls probably thought...'one more short leg of this trip, and I'm home'....

Very sad.

That makes more sense than anything that we are hearing on TV.
