I saw that on the news last night and it was definitely a raging fire. It's too bad.

I visited a few years back...unimaginable, but becoming more and more common around the world.

Sadly my immediate thoughts are, rabid atheists or muslims. There's no evidence of either that I know of but I still can't help but wonder.

Yes, no evidence yet. Too much of a coincidence to imagine any other cause.

If its any consolation, the original cathedral had to be rebuilt after being destroyed by German bombardment in WWII...so its a replica of the original after all...and can be rebuilt again...

Seeing that one of the photos shows what appears to be scaffolding, construction accident is the likely cause. Speculating, of course.

It was used by the Conmmies as a storage warehouse.

Reconsecrated in 1990 I believe.

From the article:

"...acting St. Petersburg emergency department chief Leonid Belyayev said the blaze apparently started on scaffolding on the outside of the church, which was undergoing restoration."

How convenient.

Mikhail Dudko, a representative of the Moscow Patriarchy, said, "The destruction of any a church, regardless of what caused it, is always a great sadness and always a certain symbol, because Orthodox people believe that coincidences do not happen."

Yes it is the same church. It is called Trinity and in Russian "troitsky" Cathedral.

Someone has reported hearing an explosion (unconfirmed as of now) before the fire broke out.
