I really loved reading also. I was kind of self educated by reading while ignoring much of what was being presented in the classroom. In a fourth grade reading competition I read more than twice as many books as the next closest student. People think It odd that I got a set of encyclopedias donated to me when I was a child and I read the entire collection from A to Z. I also used to read the dictionary. Now I'm kind of a repository of trivia. Obviously I still like keeping up with politics and current events here on freerepublic also.

You are the first person to mention my screen name being the worlds first operational jet fighter aircraft. I think they not only look sleek like a P-51D Mustang, but were also a milestone in aircraft development. As an aerospace engineer, mechanic, inspector, and pilot by training, I find it novel that most of the technology that we are applying today was discovered by the world war two axis and allies during or immediately after the war.
It seems technology could really benefit from a real war sometime, not one of these limited conflicts where we use our existing equipment to fight with one hand tied behind our back to stalemate with some third world thugs. I'm talking about a real a$$ kicking to unconditional surrender war against a worthy and intelligent opponent where the outcome depends on who develops and fields newer super weapons first. (I'm speaking theoretically of course. No one except the muslims really want war when a reasonable peace can be had. And no I don't consider most muslims to represent an intelligent opponent. I've heard that the Israelis often take muslim prisoners by using monkey traps that depend on the muslim not letting go of the shiny object to keep their fist caught inside the small opening.)

I just missed an air-show at Willow Run airport by Detroit. They didn't have a 262, but they had almost every other plane that flew in WWII. They even had a P-38 Lightning. They had a Lancaster, Spits, Hurricanes, Corsairs, Tomahawks, Avengers, almost every big-boy that was ever designated with a B, including a B-2 fly-over, and bunches of Mustangs. Sure would have been a hoot to have seen some of that history.

I like the Monkey-trap thing, very apt.

If you've never been to the EAA's Oshkosh Airshow it is kind of the Mecca for aviation buffs. I've been three times and still haven't seen it all. It is definitely a learning experience and good family fun. I saw a Corsair explode one year. Seeing the video is not the same as feeling the radiant heat from the fireball.

Words have "gender." Teachers have a sex. Anyone who does not understand that distinction should not be allowed anywhere near the educational process with respect to children.

Do you suppose there's any evidence available that the Gloria Steinem/Betty Freidan/NOW crowd was somewhat in the service of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce crowd?

I do not know of a specific reference to give you on this point. However, I know that the business interest in luring more educated, middle-class women into the work force in other western nations was openly discussed in overseas media, back in the same era. Our media usually seem to under-report such things, so seeing the discussion in a foreign source in those times very definitely struck me.

It is more of a tangent than yours to note that I learned via an airmailed edition of the same source, before any of our American media had yet reported the fact, that Nixon had ended the Gold Exchange standard in 1971! Think about that.
