MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - State Sen. Kathryn Bowers, awaiting trial on federal corruption charges, announced Monday she would resign because of poor health.
"This has nothing to do with the criminal case. This has to do with my health," said Bowers, who easily won the Democratic nomination for re-election on Aug. 3.
Bowers said she has high blood pressure and a rapid heart rate.
In a letter to Lt. Gov. John Wilder, the Senate president, Bowers said her resignation will take effect Sept. 1.
The executive committee of the Shelby County Democratic Party will choose a replacement candidate for the November general election.
Bowers is one of 11 people, including five current or former state lawmakers, charged in the FBI's bribery investigation code named Tennessee Waltz.
Four Tennessee Waltz defendants have pleaded guilty and two were convicted at trial.

"Bowers said she has high blood pressure and a rapid heart rate."
The prospect of prison time'll do that to a person.

"This has nothing to do with the criminal case. This has to do with my health," said Bowers. They ought to add a charge of lying to the American people, too, for that one.

The democrap party in TN has been thoroughly corrupt for quite some time. Rep. Ford comes out of this cesspool in Shelby County and is as much a product of their twisted liberalism as any democrap alive today. What's so irksome is the 'choice' we TN voters have is Bob 'two-faced' Corker! But I shall hold my nose and vote for Corker, then go home and flagellate my back for an hour as penance.

I just wish we could force her to stay on the ticket as they did Delay in Texas. With everyone that has actually had to go to trial pleading guilty so far, I bet the stress for her and Uncle John Ford is getting pretty bad. There are reports here that he will plead guilty.

Ego will never allow Big Daddy John to plead guilty. And, why should he, always gotten off before. Hopefully this is his 10th life.

The TN GOP called yesterday for money to help elect Corker, I told them NO, I didn't have it to spare...they were lucky I was voting for the RINO Corker as the lesser of two evils. JUNIOR must not be elected to the Senate.

They did a great investigation of her on the local CBS station. Pointed out how she is skimming lots of money from her political pot for personal use. They also pointed out that by retiring now she gets to keep her pension and benefits. If she were re-elected and convicted she would lose them.
Also, one of the few reasons that the Dems can appoint a replacement is because of "health".

Pub primary was a prime example of a moderate (Corker) with plenty of money for ads and a conservative, well qualified, man of character (Bryant) without the funds to show him to the public via media ads. Tennessee lost when Corker won the nomination because Ed Bryant is by far the best man of character, a true gentleman conservative.
