The Hispanic voice behind Illinois Minutemen
The Daily Herald ^ | 8/31/06 | Tara Malone

Posted on 08/31/2006 6:05:10 AM PDT by chicagolady

Her name throws people.

The vision and voice behind the Illinois Minuteman Civil Defense and its suburban mobilization is, in fact, Hispanic.

Rosanna Pulido contends her heritage and her gender - she's the only woman to head a state Minuteman branch - make her an effective leader for those who say illegal immigration must be thwarted, borders sealed and laws enforced.

So, too, do her ethnic roots confound immigrant activists who wonder why the granddaughter of a Mexican farmer and a Christian who once ministered to Mexico's poor would put security over solidarity.

Pulido, a 50-year-old Chicago native, shrugs off such criticism. For her, the issue is defined by right and wrong, by patriotism and faith.

In the latest of our weekly conversation series, Pulido discussed patrolling the border, the suburban roots of the state's largest anti-illegal immigrant organization - seven of every 10 members are suburban - and immigrant marches, like the four-day procession from Chicago to Batavia this weekend. Excerpts of the discussion follow.

On her role as a Hispanic woman within the anti-illegal immigration movement: Just like I wanted a Middle Eastern person to stand up and denounce 9/11, to say we deny radical Islam, I thought this is my chance. That's why I felt I needed to take leadership. They call everyone a racist. Well, I'm Mexican. Well, they still call me a racist.

On being labeled a racist: It's more a reflection on them, than it is me. It's the lowest common denominator. They know if they had to argue and debate the laws, they wouldn't win. It's the only bullet they have to put in their gun. ...

I am thankful for a decent article. Tara Malone is coming around. After speaking with her and doing interviews for over a year, I feel she is starting to see the illegal immigration picture for what it really is. That is obviously reflected in this article. She was fair and balanced and did not engage in SPIN.

Isn't one of the Minutemen leaders in the southwest named Al Garza?

Yes, Al Garza is our National Director of the Minuteman Civil Defense.

I am a State Director. There is a director for each state.

Her name throws people.

I'd have to say that anyone thrown by her name or her heritage does not understand the debate over *illegal* immigration.

security over solidarity

Solidarity = racism in the debate over illegal immigration. And that debate stems from the entire race/ethnicity--baiting strategy of the Democrats.

That IS the only bullet they have because their ammunition IS polarizing and demonizing based on race and ethnicity. That is why they lost the Congress in the 90's and the presidency in 1998.

They do the same with black Americans. Black Republicans are de facto called "Uncle Tom." Their publications ridicule Condi Rice with the worst poison racism that went right along with the racism of the last century. It's brushed off because the Democrat party and too many of its voters are hypocrites when it comes to race.

They remind me forcibly of the "Christian" Americans who ridicule and demean an entire religion and its members because of the actions of a few of those members. They confuse religion with politics. That would be the Islam-haters. They remind me of the Jew-haters who blamed the death of Jesus on all Jews.
The race-baiting of the Democrats is no better than the bigot-baiting of some freepers.
It's wrong.

God opened her eyes!

You know, I could think that she used her own brain for that kind of rational thinking. However, when it comes to this kind of gut-wrenching change of heart....you are correct, God opened her eyes.
Lol. No one else would be able to do that.

Completely spot-on.

I argue with a group of Lefties on a neutral board. They are continually playing the "racist" and "fascist" card against those on thr Right. They have no argument at that point, and look completely foolish to anyone with half a brain.
