Gabler's Gripe: Karr Crimped Katrina Coverage

I don't know about you, but by the end of the Bush-bashing festival that was the MSM's coverage of the one-year Katrina anniversary, I was about ready to climb up on my roof with a bedsheet message begging to be evacuated by helicopter.

Neal Gabler also had a complaint about the Katrina anniversary coverage: there wasn't enough of it.

On this evening's Fox News Watch, Gabler made his comment in the context of the panel's discussion of the John Mark Karr fiasco. Griped Gabler:

"The embarrassment isn't that he wasn't guilty, the embarrassment is the disproportionate amount of coverage he got even if he had been guilty. The problem is there [were] virtually no [TV news] minutes devoted to Katrina on the eve of the Katrina anniversary."

Could it be that when he's not on FNW, Neal inhabits Pluto? Anyone living in this solar system surely could not have escaped the flood of Katrina coverage last week.

I forgot to watch "Newswatch" today. Sounds like I gave my blood pressure a break. I usually spend about half the show yelling at gabler and that idiot jane hall.

"Rita was the same size as Katrina..."

When I first read this sentence, I thought you were referring to the size of Rita Cosby's hips.

I live in Lake Charles. Let's just say that SWLA is nothing like NOLA. It's booming here. My brother works in Johnson's Bayou and they are coming along well. If the government agencies on all levels would get out of the people's way progress would be much faster.

There was a story of an older crab fisherman whose property was on the industrial canal. The new building restrictions were very cost prohibitive so he built him a house boat and bought him a nice chemical toilet and a new trailer to haul it all with him when the next storm comes along. He only has to deal with the Coast Guard now, not the various planning and development folks. He was proud of that toilet too. lol He's back to work doing what he loves. He was 67 years old and knew he was too old to start over and all he loved was crabbing. He's doing very well now. That is typical of the people in Cameron Parish. They are tough and resourceful.

If Gabler and the rest of the DBM hadn't been hyperventilating over Ernesto, hoping and praying that it would turn into a Cat 5 monster that would annihilate the entire eastern seaboard, they could have devoted a few more hours to pounding Katrina into the ground.

Gabler is a gasbag, and clearly doesn't watch as much television as I do. I remember the cable channels hyper-ventilating about the possibility of Ernesto hitting New Orleans practically before Ernesto was named. To refresh my memory, I looked up dates:

""""The strong wind shear and the Saharan Air Layer prevented development in the early stages, but it became much more organized near the Windward Islands. It was declared Tropical Depression Five on August 24 after a Hurricane Hunters flight found a closed circulation.

The system continued to become more organized, and it was upgraded to a tropical storm on August 25 west of the Lesser Antilles, after another reconnaissance flight. Organization continued through August 26 leading to a strengthening to a Category 1 hurricane in the early hours of August 27. Ernesto became the first hurricane of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season with maximum sustained winds of about 75 mph.[1] The 5 a.m. August 27 advisory noted that Ernesto was "likely undergoing rapid intensification". However, it interacted with the mountainous land mass of Hispaniola and rapidly weakened to tropical storm strength. It was expected to regain strength after traversing Cuba's rough terrain.[2] At 11 a.m. EDT August 28, Ernesto was about 35 miles west of Guantanamo, moving northwest near 10 mph. It dumped heavy rain in localized areas of eastern Cuba, but the storm's winds had diminished greatly as it started moving across land, leading Cuban meteorologist Jose Rubiera said on state television.""""""

All through late August, cable weather watchers became Katrina obsessed, never mentioning Ernesto without the ubiquitious reference to Katrina, or "the levees won't hold", or "this time New Orleans will have 500 buses on the ready."

Neal Gabler is a fool, but smart enough not to criticize the MSM for hoping New Orleans would get another hurricane just in time for the Bash Bush Katrina Anniversary.

No, the realm Neal Gabler inhabits is a lot further out than Pluto.

We are over in Orange and took a good beating here also. Rita is the most forgotten storm of 2005. The people of Cameron have always been some of the most resourceful in LA. I admire that attitude about not having to deal with government agencies. Let the people do what needs to be done. Keep up the good work.

Screw Katrina, and screw Captain Highpants. They should have covered the terrorist who ran down the 14 people in the Jewish neighborhood.

Gabler is the worst. If he ever pointed his fat finger at me the way he does on that show he'd draw back a nub.

Whatever the truth about the level of Katrina coverage, Gabler was exactly right about the irrelevance of Karr's guilt, and it was refreshing to hear his lone articulation of that point. The media, including Fox, has been absolutely shameful in its Karr coverage. They were virtually hanging out a help wanted sign for people willing to commit crime to gain notoriety. They have done our society a great disservice.

You may be correct about his misguided emphasis on Katrina, but I believe you have missed the greater point.

Poor Neal,

If the ACLunatics hadn't given such aid and comfort to NAMBLA these nut bags wouldn't be so empowered, on-message, organized and informed and the media wouldnt have given Karr the time of day.

Too bad their little underground world of Pedophiliac Predators have got such a good PR network going. They not only know all the facts of the Ramsey case, they feel totally justified in making a 7 year old child the object of their desire. They're right on message! The Katrina thing is old news.
