Iraq holds 'key al-Qaeda figure'

The Iraqi authorities have announced the arrest of a man they say is the second-in-command of al-Qaeda in Iraq. Iraq's national security adviser, Mowaffaq al-Rubaie, told a news conference the man, Hamad Jama al-Saedi, was detained a few days ago.

Mr Rubaie said the man was behind the bombing of a Shia shrine in Samarra in February that drew revenge attacks.

American troops killed the insurgent group's key leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, in June.

"We announce today the arrest of the most important al-Qaeda leader after the criminal Abu Ayyub al-Masri. He's the second man in the organisation," Mr Rubaie said.

This is a reference to the man believed to be al-Qaeda's current leader in Iraq, who remains at large.

I'm glad the Iraqis are holding him.
Somehow, I believe, "panties on his head"
are going to be the least of his worries.
I bet he's begging to go to Gitmo.

Somehow, I feel sorry for his second in command. Being the #2 guy in AQ anywhere is getting to be really dangerous. I just wish this report concerned OBL.

I get the feeling that being #2, or #8, or #93 in AQ is getting dangerous. From what's been reported, this guy is singing.
If the Iraqi's are in fact holding him, I doubt that a report from the UN or Human Rights Watch is of much concern to them.
There was a thread on FR about how we can't sink to their ( the terrorists) Level.
Maybe we can't, but they damn sure can-and this puke knows it.
I get the impression that the Iraqi Security forces are in fact standing up-and the gloves are coming off and being replaced with brass knuckles.

Functionally, this guy was #1, as originally announced by the Shura Council. They then named an Iraqi the head of Al Qaeda in Iraq to be more pc and get away from the image of foreign leadership that was hurting recruiting.

This guy is old school muj, predated Zarqawi. His capture is probably bigger than killing Zarqawi because he is reported to coordinate and know of all the fighting cells. I suspect that is why he was captured while Zarqawi was killed.

This pretty well ends the old school muj, that had any talent, and actually knew bin Laden and Zawahiri.

The info he gave up took out nearly all of the money men and second and third tier leadership.

Now it will be cell leaders acting on their own with limited money.

Al Qaeda is finished, will probably disband and join the other Sunni militias and Baathists.

Oh geeeeze. I'm glad I missed that one. I'd have been into a flame war in a heartbeat. I hate those, too. That is right on par with another liberal bleat....."Violence never solves anything....."

Not sinking to "their" level is exactly the theme used in the notorious Church (as in Frank Church) Committee.... that cowardly RAT (what else is new?) from the 1970's that was successful in ripping the guts out of the CIA by basically declaring that SPYING is a dirty business in which America should refrain from participating. Therefore the assets were not in place when the Ayatollah came to power to predict the takeover of our Embassy. The assets were not in place to detect any of the terrorism that has struck the world since, including 911. Yes spying is a dirty, bloody game. So is politics. Professionals in both arenas must do terrible things in order to preserve and protect this great nation.

I agree.
Fight fire with fire.
But I think it is instructive to note the increasing role that the Iraqis are playing.
As these guys (the Iraqis) stand up and take control and we stand down, the rules of the game change.
And it ain't benefiting the bad guys.
I just hope it peaks to influence the upcoming election.
I just don't see a series of events that can benefit the Dems.
If we are hit, the Reps point (and run ads) with Reid saying they killed the Patriot act and the NSA terrorist surveillance program.
If they don't het us, we run on keeping America safe.
It seems like a no brainier.
OTOH, the White House stood behind Specter.
With these guys, the possibility of snatching defeat from the jaws of victory is always possible.
To bad
Signing off.
And thanks for your service Ex.
