Bush: 'Nuclear Power Safe, Clean, Renewable'

President Bush said Monday the economy is growing steadily and jobs are plentiful, but America must work harder to break its dependency on foreign oil. Making a Labor Day appearance at Maryland's Paul Hall Center for Training and Education, which offers vocational training to Seafarer's International Union members, Bush said "dependence on foreign oil jeopardizes our ability to grow."

"Problem is, we get oil from some parts of the world and they simply don't like us," he said. "The more dependent we are on that type of energy, the less likely it will be that we are able to compete and so people can have good paying jobs."

Bush also said he is interested in new technology that advances that produce battery-operated cars and allows people to fuel their vehicles with ethanol, particularly in Farm Belt states. And he made a fresh push for greater development of nuclear energy.

"Nuclear power is safe and nuclear power is clean and nuclear power is renewable," the president said.

On trade, he said the United States must "continue opening markets to U.S. products."

"... My message to the world is this: just treat us as we treat you," Bush said. "I believe we can compete with anybody, anytime, as long as the rules are fair."

Bush again called on Congress to make permanent a host of tax cuts, saying "I like it when people working for a living have more after-tax money in their pocket."

He said people in all walks of life should work hard to ensure that "our workers have the skills necessary to compete in the 21st Century."

Bush made a brief mention on the war and terrorism issue, thanking America's fighting men and women for their sacrifices and saying, "They may hear all the political discourse going on, but the people of this country - the people of the United States of America - stand squarely behind the men and women who wear our uniform."

And we don't have to rely on jihadists to get it.

They spelled it wrong, darn media. It should be:

Nuclear Nuculer Power Safe, Clean, Renewable'

"Problem is, we get oil from some parts of the world and they simply don't like us,"

Truth, plain and simple.

It's been 30 years since a new nuclear power plant was built. And 30 years since a new oil refinery was built.
Blame it on obstructionalist environmentalists who are placing America at risk because of our dependence on foreign produced energy.

Overcome envirowackos, and we will have all the energy we need for a long long time. Vote for the politicians who understand the consequences of foreign oil dependency. They are most likely Republican!

True but we could also drill as much oil for near-time useage off Fla., NJ, the Gulf Coast and Ca. if only the nutty enviros realized that we need it now and then can go to alternatives like nuclear as we stop any dependence on OPEC and especially the jihadists or any Muslim state.

Renewable? Fast Breeder?

Don’t forget the reprocessing plant that Jimmah put the knife to.

We could drill everywhere but we still don't have enough refinery capacity to make a difference. We are running at over 90% capacity. Look here

For all the tons and tons of U-238 that be turned into fuel, the possibilities defy description. The Shah of Iran was correct, oil is too valuable to burn.

Well then, (paraphrasing phillyfanatic) we could drill and build refineries if only the nutty enviros ...

That would give some time for development of commercial thorium reactors - "...a radical new technology based on thorium [that] promises what uranium never delivered: abundant, safe and clean energy - and a way to burn up old radioactive waste."

Dubya is right about Nuclear Power being safe. The nuclear power industry in the U.S. has an amazingly good safety record with regard to radiation related accidents. More people have died in ted kennedy's car than from radiation exposure from U.S. power plants.

One reason for safer conditions is that they no longer use fuel rods for producing power, they now use ceramic coated fuel beads that can be dispersed in the event of overheating. Thus the bogus china syndrome of hanoi hanna & Jack Lemmon fame is really not possible.

Where did you get this information?

There is not a single “Pebble Bed” reactor operating anywhere in the world. There was a demonstration reactor in Germany but is no longer operating.

There are 111 operating power reactors in the US and all of them use fuel rods.

The hold-up these days with offshore drilling is more the states than the enviro-wackos. People get all up in arms if they think they have to look at oil or gas platforms. I think the State of FL just voted against having them off shore in the Gulf of Mexico.

I vacationed with my sister and girl cousins in Ft. Morgan AL this summer and there were at least 5 platforms just offshore that we could see. At night, you realized there were many more just beyond our range of vision because you could see the fires on the horizon. They were not abhorrent to look at, either day or night. Actually, at night, it was kind of cool looking at the flames in the dark.

I thought one of the energy companies was building some pebble bed reactors in South Africa.

Thanks for the link. The article was a little long and rambled off in a lot of different directions, but was interesting.

I had a problem with a couple of things in the article that I thought were misleading but this one was particularly irritating

Hashemi-Nezhad also says thorium is a highly abundant resource "550 times more abundant in nature than uranium-235".

Earlier in the article they explained that Thorium 232 was incapable of fission as Uranium 235 was then here they compare the abundance of two.

If they want to compare Thorium 232 and Uranium they will have to compare it with Uranium 238 because these are the “Breed Stock” isotopes and in which case it will not be so favorable a comparison I believe.
