Haleigh Poutre Almost Victim of Euthanasia, Now Making Good Progress

Boston, MA (LifeNews.com) -- Haleigh Poutre was the victim of child abuse and was nearly killed via euthanasia when Massachusetts officials gave up on her after she entered a coma. Now Poutre, once termed "brain dead" by doctors, continues to improve and is speaking a few words, her grandmother says.

Sandra Sudyka, the girl's biological grandmother, is no longer allowed to visit her granddaughter and now says she is ready to speak to the media about Poutre's condition.

She told The Republican newspaper that she last saw Poutre on July 18 but indicated she was "doing well."

"She was bright-eyed and smiling. She is always responsive to us," Sudyka explained.

Department of Social Services had asked Sudyka not to talk with reporters about Haleigh, but since they will no longer allow her and Haleigh's biological mother, Allison Avrett, to visit the 12 year-old, she said she's going to talk to the media.

"I decided since they broke the deal, I am going to talk. People should know how well she is doing," Sudyka told the newspaper.

"They don't want people to know how she is doing after they wanted to pull the plug," Sudyka said.

DSS spokeswoman Denise Monteiro declined an interview with The Republican but said that the visiting privileges have been suspended, not terminated.

Haleigh first began speaking in June, her grandmother told the newspaper.

"I was saying to her 'I love you,' and she was trying to say 'love' and it came out as a vibration...'ove,'" Sudyka said.

Sudyka, who is working with an attorney to adopt the girl, said she has said hello, responds to comments and questions, speaks nonverbally and is able to write her name. Haleigh can't walk and is confined to a wheelchair.

Avrett, Poutre's biological mother, lost custody of her daughter after physically abusing her. Poutre was put into a foster home where her adoptive parents also abused her. Her adopted mother committed suicide after abusing Poutre so much she had to be hospitalized.

DSS took Poutre into custody and when she appeared to slip into a coma, the agency asked the state Supreme Court for permission to take her life. That's when Poutre began responding.

Poutre has been receiving physical, speech and occupational therapy since January 26 at Franciscan Hospital for Children in Brighton.

Gov. Mitt Romney appointed a commission to look into how the state failed to properly handle the girl's case.

Ping to wagglebee thread on Swiss Suicide and the death lovers beloved by Hitler on the march...

Thanks, Salvation.

LONDON, September 22, 2006 (LifeSiteNews.com) – The Swiss suicide organization that has helped to kill at least 54 British clients and uncounted others from around Europe, is in a test case in the country’s Supreme Court arguing that people suffering from depression or who are “tired of life” should be able to legally use the facility to end their lives.

Ludwig Minelli, the founder of Dignitas, the Zurich-based organisation said his group was seeking to overturn the Swiss law that allows them to assist only people with a terminal illness.

Ping to thread on the unborn and the topic at the other end of the forced death spectrum. Mercy for the criminals, but for the innocents????

H.R. 6099 would require abortion providers to notify women who want to have an abortion 20 weeks after fertilization that the evidence suggests their unborn child feels pain and they may request anesthesia for their unborn child in order to reduce or eliminate the pain. This legislation would not require anesthesia and it specifically protects the doctor's right to inform the woman of any risks to her according to his or her own best medical judgment.

Thanks for carrying the message of support for America and our troops. It helps them to know that when they defeat the enemy, we won't turn around and adopt the practices they're fighting against. If we set up our own T-4 Program now, how long before we start lobbing off the heads of infidels?

She told The Republican newspaper

A little off topic but I wonder what this has to do with anything. Everytime I see a story where they feel compelled to mention the political persuasion of the source, a warning bell goes off.

That's a move in the right direction. How many women would go through with an abortion, given that knowledge? I'm sure it would cut down on the number.

"The Republican" newspaper reported what they were told by the source, Sandra Sudyka. What is Sandra Sudyka's political persuasion? I must have missed that part.

I meant in the article it mentioned Republican newspaper. It always amazes me that the media always mentions if a paper or a person is Republican as if to say ignore it.

....................

I still remember writing to an editor and asking her to make some corrections to an editorial she had written on Terri Schiavo. Though I had actual proof of her errors, she wrote back and said she was standing by the facts as written in the editorial. "Standing by the facts as written in the editorial"? Inaccurate information became fact because she wrote that it was? How interesting. I didn't ask her to take my word. I offered to send her a copy of the actual autopsy report. My offer was met with silence. And so goes the saga of the Terri Schiavo case. How many care about the truth any ways?

In recent days, I read a comment that suggested that Terri Schiavo was in fact brain dead or the religious right would have jumped right on that issue, they didn't (supposedly) and therefore she was. I wonder where he was or where he hopes we were?

How many times have people made it a big deal that "three" people said that Terri made statements that she would not want to be kept alive on life support? Test time. How many can name who the three people were and what their relationship was to Michael?

When is an embryo not an embryo? .....

Snip

Last year the British and American papers were replete with the story relating to the legal battle over the life of Terri Schiavo who had been involved in a car accident and who subsequently developed a vegetative state following a US court ruling that a feeding tube should be removed.

Using sensitive "functional magnetic resonance imaging" techniques (functional MRI), which are capable of detecting areas of the brain that are functioning at any one time, neuroscientists have now shown that certain parts of the brain "light up" when such patients are asked questions or stimulated by conversation, indicating that different parts of the brain were responding and distinguishing between different scenarios.

The practical outcome of such findings is to emphasise the fact that current and standard techniques for determining brain death may have to be updated to include expensive functional MRI techniques before one could be absolutely sure that there is no brain function in persons who had been categorised as PVS.

It is now "Ask Arienna Time" for the opinions rising from the heap of Puffington Host and the mind of Byron Williams. Will the real Barry Goldwater please stand up? Oh, never mind. As in the title, sometimes I can't recognize myself in the mirror, either.

Goldwater conservatism had justifiable distrust for the Jerry Falwell-type morality that is pervasive in contemporary GOP dogma. I can't see Goldwater supporting the abusive manner that the Republican Congress interjected itself into the Terri Schiavo case. Moreover, he displayed the type of self-reflection that led him to rethink certain positions -- unheard of in this White House.

Goldwater Wouldn't Recognize this Brand of Conservatism

Opinions wafting in from Seattle, this time not Starbucks...

WASHINGTON -- President Bush undoubtedly is feeling a little peckish. When his most passionately held beliefs come before the courts, he almost routinely gets his hand slapped.

After nearly six years of trying to retool the federal bench -- and getting more of his appointees confirmed than any other recent president -- he is having remarkably little success in getting some of his boldest moves declared constitutional.

Bush is hoping to finally control judicial branch, too

Time is up on the quiz. I cheated and read the rest of the story so my score must be set aside, otherwise I would have failed it.

Opinion from, no kidding, Turn Left...

One of the most publicized and anticipated races over the last year has grown even more interesting over the past few weeks. The contest between the embattled Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum and State Treasurer Bob Casey Jr. for a US Senate seat in this year’s midterm election has narrowed to 8 points to 48% for Casey to 40% for Santorum in the latest poll. As usual, however, there is a story behind those numbers, a story that has wound its way, replete with intrigue, to last Sunday’s debate between Santorum and Casey on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”

The narrative begins with Santorum, as most issues relating even tangentially to the Senator invariably do. First elected in 1994, Rick Santorum leaves a lasting impression on those who meet him, those who hear his controversial statements, and those who are insulted and offended by them. In fact, it is Santorum’s inflammatory comments about gays, his efforts to keep Terri Schiavo on life support, his strong support of President Bush’s efforts to privatize Social Security, and his continued insistence of the presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that have that have him in a tight race in the first place. Among his missteps in the last two years is his release of a book last summer entitled It Takes a Family which espoused more of the incendiary social conservative views that have angered scores of moderates and even members of his own party.

>> ... Terri Schiavo who had been involved in a car accident ...

Good grief, what next?! The ridiculous "bulimia" theory of her injury was ruled out by the autopsy, now they decide she was in a car wreck?

She wasn't. The autopsy would rule it out, too. The only way it could possibly have happened is if Michael Schiavo, Scott Schiavo and Joan Schiavo all swore to Judge Greer that Terri had been injured in an automobile accident. If three Schiavos say so, it becomes legal fact.
