‘W’ is subject of suit: Companies argue over copyright

The political overtones of “W” will be the subject of a courtroom debate as part of an alleged copyright infringement case is considered in Texarkana this week.

The Republican National Committee and the Spalding Group are being sued by Rally Concepts LLC about the ubiquitous “W” used in President George W. Bush’s 2004 re-election campaign.

I wear the baseball cap version of it around all the time.

Is the problem with exact copies of the logo, or with knockoffs that exploit the concept of the right edge of the letter "W" serving as a flagpole? I'm not positive, but I would be surprised if the letter-as-flagpole hasn't already been done for any of the letters where it could work (including H, I, J, N, U, V, W, and maybe K and X as well).
