The President Strikes Back (Don't misunderestimate this man!)
National Review Online ^ | 9/6/06 | Mario Loyola

Posted on 09/06/2006 1:04:15 PM PDT by teddyballgame

The President just pulled one of the best maneuvers of his entire presidency. By transferring most major Al Qaeda terrorists to Guantanamo, and simultaneously sending Congress a bill to rescue the Military Commissions from the Supreme Court's ruling Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, the President spectacularly ambushed the Democrats on terrain they fondly thought their own. Now Democrats who oppose (and who have vociferously opposed) the Military Commissions will in effect be opposing the prosecution of the terrorists who planned and launched the attacks of September 11 for war crimes. And if that were not enough, the President also frontally attacked the Hamdan ruling's potentially chilling effect on CIA extraordinary interrogation techniques, by arguing that Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions is too vague, and asking Congress to define clearly the criminal law limiting the scope of permissible interrogation.

Taken as a whole, the President's maneuver today turned the political tables completely around. He stole the terms of debate from the Democrats, and rewrote them, all in a single speech. It will be delightful to watch in coming days and hours as bewildered Democrats try to understand what just hit them, and then sort through the rubble of their anti-Bush national security strategy to see what, if anything, remains.

What Bush did today was brilliant.

Let the Rats go on public record just what it is our military and intelligence personnel can and can't do to sweat the worst sort of jihadist.

Panties on a head? Kerry will be wringing his hands that it's against the Geneva convention.

Sleep deprivation? Kennedy will be thundering that we're the evil doers.

Drape them in an Israeli flag? Durbin will whine that we're like Pol Pot.

I see some great GOP commercials coming up in the next month or so. Provided the Republicans actually get working on this.

That was a gutsy move! The Democrats will have to explain to the American people they're in favor of defending Al Qaeda terrorists. If they want to cut their own political throats, let them go right ahead. And for that purpose, do they want to limit a wartime President's authority over the military? Gotcha!

(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )

Though GW isn't Darth Vader, the title of the thread/post invokes the thought of John Williams' Imperial March (from "The Empire Strikes Back").

I'm interested to read the FReaction from the live thread. Must run out, and do my part to remove myself from the 4.7% unemployment number (layoff).

It is a joke. Bush once famously stated that he should'nt be misunderestimated. Dems pounced and made fun of it. Bush laughed last and won the 2000 election over Gore.

I think the best interrogation technique I ever saw was Sean Connery's method in "The Untouchables" when he took an already dead gangster outside of a cabin in view of a guy they wanted to talk (but didn't know his confederate was dead), and Connery puts a gun barrel in the dead guy's mouth and "tells" him that if he doesn't talk, he's dead - naturally the stiff doesn't talk so Connery blows his brains out, and their recalitrant witness sang like a freakin canary.

And in my view that tactic would be all too kind for the terrorist scum we've got housed down in Gitmo.

LOL, he sure would!

At one time I thought Graham had some major stones on him, but after he started waltzing and schmaltzing with Senator Hildabeast, I knew he was two steps away from RINO status, and he hasn't stepped back a damn bit.

I have no use for him.

This is great - force the snivelling weasels in Congress (both parties, but especially the Demagogues) to finally step up and define in legislation what their position is on terrorist prisoners, interrogations, military tribunals, etc. If the US Congress wants to make 9/11 architects Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Ramzi Binsalbib subject to all the protections and comforts of the Geneva Conventions, let them say so now, to the electorate, and see what the majority of the electorate thinks about it. The 'Rats will whine that President Bush is "politicizing" the issue in an election campaign, but this is exactly what a democracy should be about, its legislators and elected executive leaders accountable to the electorate.

Let's see how fast the Demagogues try to whine, snivel, and change the subject.

You may recall that a U.S. Army Lieutenant was arrested and put in jail by our own military justice system for firing his sidearm into the ground next to a detainee in order to get information - which worked, and the information saved the lives of our soldiers. The Lieutenant said that he would stop at nothing to save the lives of his men. I believe that he ended up being discharged and did not serve any jail time. Lawyers – Shakespeare had it right – they’ll get us all killed yet!

I know egg-SACT-ly what they are going to do. They're going to look confused and, after a couple of false starts, pretend they care about immigration reform.

And while they are doing that the Republicans are going to pound them bloody about their lack of any plan to defend this nation against terrorists.

Shalom.

So? Everyone knows these guys were held somewhere. If the public didn't know where, it was "secret". The DBM doesn't give the public credit for enough smarts to understand that people that are captured and not released are being held somewhere.
