The President just pulled one of the best maneuvers of his entire presidency. By transferring most major Al Qaeda terrorists to Guantanamo, and simultaneously sending Congress a bill to rescue the Military Commissions from the Supreme Court's ruling Hamdan v. Rumsfeld, the President spectacularly ambushed the Democrats on terrain they fondly thought their own. Now Democrats who oppose (and who have vociferously opposed) the Military Commissions will in effect be opposing the prosecution of the terrorists who planned and launched the attacks of September 11 for war crimes. And if that were not enough, the President also frontally attacked the Hamdan ruling's potentially chilling effect on CIA extraordinary interrogation techniques, by arguing that Common Article 3 of the Geneva Conventions is too vague, and asking Congress to define clearly the criminal law limiting the scope of permissible interrogation.
Taken as a whole, the President's maneuver today turned the political tables completely around. He stole the terms of debate from the Democrats, and rewrote them, all in a single speech. It will be delightful to watch in coming days and hours as bewildered Democrats try to understand what just hit them, and then sort through the rubble of their anti-Bush national security strategy to see what, if anything, remains.

If I don't misunderestimate him, will I be underestimating him?
If I don't misunderestimate him, will I be underestimating him?
Mmmmm????
Not sure on that one.
MU-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Bush is framing the debate for the mid-terms. Nothing short of sheer brilliance.
How can one misunderestimate?
I think its a joke. At least, I hope...
"Karl Rove is back!"
The architect stikes again. Carl Levin just on "the Situation Room" stuttering. Dems are on their heels - watch them stumble badly.
What Bush did today was brilliant.
Let the Rats go on public record just what it is our military and intelligence personnel can and can't do to sweat the worst sort of jihadist.
Panties on a head? Kerry will be wringing his hands that it's against the Geneva convention.
Sleep deprivation? Kennedy will be thundering that we're the evil doers.
Drape them in an Israeli flag? Durbin will whine that we're like Pol Pot.
I see some great GOP commercials coming up in the next month or so. Provided the Republicans actually get working on this.
(No more Olmert! No more Kadima! No more Oslo! )
I still think that SCOTUS screwed up big time on the Gitmo decision though...
Though GW isn't Darth Vader, the title of the thread/post invokes the thought of John Williams' Imperial March (from "The Empire Strikes Back").
I'm interested to read the FReaction from the live thread. Must run out, and do my part to remove myself from the 4.7% unemployment number (layoff).
This just proves how dumb Bush is....bwahahahaahahaha!!! He does this to them all the time.Outflanks them and turns their own stuff against them. This is classic Bush, I am glad the cowboy is back in the saddle again. Just in time for the November elections. Now unthaw BinLadin from Roves Freezer and trot out the dead terrorist!!!bwahahahahahaha!
"How can one misunderestimate?"
It is a joke. Bush once famously stated that he should'nt be misunderestimated. Dems pounced and made fun of it. Bush laughed last and won the 2000 election over Gore.
Brilliant Strategery!!!!!!!!
Go GW!!!
It's Karl Rove's fault.
Now Hastert and Frist will keep this on the front burner through November.
All those Republican punks distancing themselves from the President in their campaigns are now pensively staring out the window...
I think the best interrogation technique I ever saw was Sean Connery's method in "The Untouchables" when he took an already dead gangster outside of a cabin in view of a guy they wanted to talk (but didn't know his confederate was dead), and Connery puts a gun barrel in the dead guy's mouth and "tells" him that if he doesn't talk, he's dead - naturally the stiff doesn't talk so Connery blows his brains out, and their recalitrant witness sang like a freakin canary.
And in my view that tactic would be all too kind for the terrorist scum we've got housed down in Gitmo.
I would not play poker with this man. He waits, waits, and waits. Dems opening door into their face again. Lets get all these turkeys on record voting against wire tapping, against trying prisoners as enemy combatants, all BEFORE the mid-terms!
Outflanked & outfoxed.
Double negative? Ain't no such thing :-)
"If I don't misunderestimate him, will I be underestimating him?"
Yes, but you will be underestimating him in the right way.
STRA-TE-GERY!
ROVE||||||||| YOU MAGNIFICENT BASTARD.
STRA-TE-GERY!
Amen, brother.
Watch Libs twist themselves into pretzals over the next 2 months.
I believe the Democrats will now clamor for the Guantanamo detainees to go into the U.S. court system.
You can't corner snot, you just get it on you.
Wait...Are you referring to "Lindsey Light In The Loafers" Graham?
Well the democrats are going to have to stand in line behind McCain and that brown noseing Graham.
NYleatherneck:
I can just see Rove posing like that. Excellent tagline too.
Keep clam, it's another old FR thing.
LOL. Sometimes he looks like he might actually enjoy it.
The Dems are stuck in a trap and this moment is absolutely beautiful.
Further.... Bush, his crew and our military are all fighting for our lives and even the dumbest citizen should now be able to clearly see this...but they wont.
God Bless President Bush, his crew and our Troops.
What's good for America is bad for the Dems.
All well and good but the headlines on my homepage all say:
Bush acknowledges secret CIA prisons -
Bush admits CIA has held terror suspects -
The MSM is screaming on this...
This is great - force the snivelling weasels in Congress (both parties, but especially the Demagogues) to finally step up and define in legislation what their position is on terrorist prisoners, interrogations, military tribunals, etc. If the US Congress wants to make 9/11 architects Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Ramzi Binsalbib subject to all the protections and comforts of the Geneva Conventions, let them say so now, to the electorate, and see what the majority of the electorate thinks about it. The 'Rats will whine that President Bush is "politicizing" the issue in an election campaign, but this is exactly what a democracy should be about, its legislators and elected executive leaders accountable to the electorate.
Let's see how fast the Demagogues try to whine, snivel, and change the subject.
You may recall that a U.S. Army Lieutenant was arrested and put in jail by our own military justice system for firing his sidearm into the ground next to a detainee in order to get information - which worked, and the information saved the lives of our soldiers. The Lieutenant said that he would stop at nothing to save the lives of his men. I believe that he ended up being discharged and did not serve any jail time. Lawyers Shakespeare had it right theyll get us all killed yet!
Has anyone noticed:
Bushisms have made their way into everyday lexicon.
Even people who dislike him, occasionally use terms like "Stratergery" and "Misunderestimate".
BWAAAHHHA AHHHAHH AHHHA HAHAAAA!
Let 'em scream. As the great philosopher Conan answered was asked what was good in life
"To crush your enemies; to see them driven before you; and to hear the lamentations of their women"
Now is the time for Frist to earn his salary by pushing for votes within the next 2 months.
Unfortunately, Frist has been notably lacking in the stones department...now's the time Senator.
I know egg-SACT-ly what they are going to do. They're going to look confused and, after a couple of false starts, pretend they care about immigration reform.
And while they are doing that the Republicans are going to pound them bloody about their lack of any plan to defend this nation against terrorists.
Shalom.
So? Everyone knows these guys were held somewhere. If the public didn't know where, it was "secret". The DBM doesn't give the public credit for enough smarts to understand that people that are captured and not released are being held somewhere.
Anybody been over to DUmmie land to see the reaction?
The point is they are screaming about these 'secret prisons' and it is already going to drown out the real message. They will go after this to the point of distraction....AGAIN!
George Bush is the Black Ice President - the opposition moves to the left, never seeing looking where they tread - until it is too late.
