SYDNEY (UPI) -- Feminist author Germaine Greer has come under criticism in Australia for disparaging remarks she made about the death of celebrity animal wrangler Steve Irwin.

A stingray killed Irwin Monday while filming in shallow water over the Great Barrier Reef, and Australia went into mourning. Greer, an Australian expatriate, wrote an opinion piece for The Guardian in England, saying the "animal world had finally taken its revenge on Irwin" and criticized his treatment of animals in his internationally syndicated "Crocodile Hunter" TV show.

saying the "animal world had finally taken its revenge on Irwin"

Why do ignorant people have to spout off and display their ignorance for all the world too see?

Animals don't take 'revenge', they survive.

The stingray Steve Irwin was following felt threatened by his presence, and did they only thing any animal would do....stop the threat.

It was just an amazingly sad and unfortunate circumstance that the ray hit him where it did.

Yeah, risking his health to move a cobra out of the path of oncoming traffic (first show of his I ever saw) is incredibly cruel, right?

I think Glenn Beck did too, and then he was shocked at the level of nasty emails he got.

I just put him on time out (I'm not listening for a while)and I added him to my "Rotten Humans" list, pending review.

Steve was a force for human/nature interaction. His position is the opposite of traditional environmentalist philosophy. He was firmly committed to being personally and directly involved with wild animals.
Those who opposed Steve and who continue to speak ill of him are the same fanatics who believe that humans are the problem with nature. Clearly, they are the humans who are Nature's problem.

There was a post yesterday that said that, , after having been taken to task by Australians for her remarks, she also referred to Steve Irwin's fans and mourners as idiots.

Sometime in the future.....(and heaven knows, I'm expecting that will be a long time in the future, not hoping for any evil to befall her; but facts are facts, and someday even Germaine Greer will depart this vale of tears).....

World Reacts to Death of Germaine Greer:

"Germaine Greer died? Never heard of him."

"Oh yeah. That was the big football player who liked to knit."

"That's sad. I just loved her in Sunrise at Campobello."

"Oh, you said Germaine Greer. I thought you said Germain Jackson. Whew! You had me worried there for a second."

"Germaine Greer died? Hell, I thought she died years ago."

"Do I know that Germaine Greer died? Yes, I do. Do you know that you have mistaken me for someone who gives a damn?"

"Well, it just goes to show you that only the good die young."

"POP! Fiiizzzzzzzz!"

And scattered weeping, wailing, and gnashing of teeth from the poor, lonely, ragged souls who "think" like Germaine Greer does.

Shall I assume you are speaking specifically of Digger, the scariest character on TV? I mute and leave the room every time that commercial comes on - I'm scared to death of it.

Look at it this way. At least I recognize Digger, and that's a hell of a lot more than I can say for this Greer person.

"Bill O'Reilly echoed her feelings as well the other night. Total creeps!!"

I refuse to watch the petty liberal. He's easily threatened. I think he has in insecurity complex when it comes to people who make the RIGHT difference on this earth. O'Reilly is a leftist.

Wednesday night on Australia's "A Current Affair" television show, host Karl Stefanovic clashed with Greer, accusing her of "just being controversial" for the sake of it, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

She also drew flak from Jonathan Wilcken, the executive director of the Australasian Regional Association of Zoological Parks and Aquaria, who told Australia's The Age newspaper Greer was out of her league.

"I'm not aware of anyone who would seriously regard Dr. Greer as having any expertise in the fields of animal welfare or conservation," Wilcken told the newspaper.

In the beginning they were mildly annoying. And expected. Some people crave attention. But it's reached a new height of stupidity & cruelty. They think they're being profound. But all they are being is profoundly foolish.
