Former Iran president urges U.S. to stay in Iraq

Former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami told a University of Virginia audience today that American military forces should not leave Iraq immediately because violence would most likely break out.

"We have reached a paradoxical stage," Khatami told an invitation-only group at the Rotunda.

"On one hand the occupation must come to an end so that there will be peace in the region. At the same time, you can't leave Iraq in the hands of insurgents and terrorists.

"If you asked me if America should leave Iraq tomorrow, I'd say no, don't do it."

Khatami's trip to U.Va. was somewhat controversial, but all was peaceful on campus during his visit. Though police surrounded the Rotunda to provide security for Khatmai, only half-dozen students protested his appearance.

This presents a quandry for the liberals. On the one hand, they want to be out of Iraq yesterday. On the other hand, an insane dictator (who they look up to) says we should stay. What SHALL they do?

At the same time, you can't leave Iraq in the hands of insurgents and terrorists.

You mean the same insurgents and terrorists that are funded and supplied by IRAN?

You can't make this stuff UP.

I see the DNC interns now...scrambling eagerly through Khatami's speeches this week, searching for the newest policy for the Democrats.

LOL, you're right. The dems will be up all night trying to figure this one out. Mental health facilities may want to activate their emergency preparedness plans.

He's a *former* insane dictator.

Khatami is making more sense than the Democrats. I'm not surprised.

Khatami is the FORMER president of Iran. He is considered a moderate among the conservative clerical class. Very popular with the people, much less so with the mullahtocracy, which is why they engineered his electoral defeat and installed the current president, HE is the insane dictator you refer to.

It took a lot of courage for Khatami to say we (the US) were a stabilizing force and should not leave. He will probably be denounced and imprisoned when he returns to Iran.

Khatami is actually more moderate that what we're used to there. He had a platform of reform including improving the condition of women, better relations with the West, rule of law instead of rule of the mullahs, and listening to the concerns of the younger generation that didn't want to live in the 1600s.

That is of course why he had to go, so the hardline Muslims rigged the last election to install Abnini-whateverthehellhisnameis.

So now that he is here and saying this stuff will he make the leap to actually saying we should liberate Iran?

True; I was just noting that this is not the *current* "President" of Iran. People seem to be confusing the two around here right now.

You're right, to an extent. But ...

A turd that doesn't smell too bad is still a turd. He was very pro-Hezbollah, wasn't he? I forget the exact quote, but didn't he say something along the lines of "shining sun" in reference to Hezbollah who killed 200+ of our Marines?

No, I see what you mean.

So let me get this straight .....

Harvard forces Summers to resign over a "comment" that they deem offensive towards women, but the University welcomes a man whose policy was to execute women who committed adultery. Am I correct?
