Scholastic squashes 'The Path to 9/11' guide

The children's publishing company says will create a discussion guide focusing on media literacy, critical thinking and historical background.

http://money.cnn.com/2006/09/07/news/companies/scholastic_911/index.htm?postversion=2006090717

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Children's publishing company Scholastic said that it is removing materials from its Web site originally created for use in conjunction with ABC's "The Path to 9/11" amid growing controversy over the docudrama.

The company said it will create a new classroom discussion guide for high school students that focuses more specifically on media literacy, critical thinking, and historical background.

Scholastic is removing materials from its site that were created for classroom use in conjunction with ABC's docudrama, "The Path to 9/11."

"After a thorough review of the original guide that we offered online to about 25,000 high school teachers, we determined that the materials did not meet our high standards for dealing with controversial issues," Dick Robinson, Chairman, President and CEO of Scholastic said in a statement.

"At the same time, we believe that developing critical thinking and media literacy skills is crucial for students in today's society in order to participate fully in our democracy and that a program such as 'The Path to 9/11' provides a very 'teachable moment' for developing these skills at the high school level. We encourage teachers not to shy away from the controversy surrounding the program, but rather to engage their students in meaningful, in-depth discussion."

Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, former National Security Adviser Sandy Berger, Clinton Foundation head Bruce Lindsey and Clinton adviser Douglas Band all wrote in the past week to Robert Iger, CEO of The Walt Disney Co. (Charts), to express concern over "The Path to 9/11." (Full story.)

The letter writers said that the miniseries contained factual errors, and that their requests for an opportunity to see it had gone unanswered.

In a statement released in apparent response to the growing uproar, ABC said, "No one has seen the final version of the film, because the editing process is not yet complete, so criticisms of film specifics are premature and irresponsible."

Scholastic's new guide states that it had no involvement with developing the ABC docudrama and that the company is not promoting the program.

The new guide will be available on Friday, Sept. 8, the company said.

"Clintoon was so wrapped up in covering his and Hitlery's butts he didn't have time to govern." And that's exactly what they are doing now. The remembrance of 9-11 is a serious problem for Dems because they have been fighting the WOT as Fifth Columnists for about the last four-and-a-half years, constantly giving the impression that 9-11 wasn't so bad that they couldn't play politics at every turn. Clinton and his missus have another problem. The Democrats could crash badly this November, owing to many factors, not the least of which is 9-11 emotions. When they do, the fingers will point towards Clinton and Company as at fault and Hillary will be known as an accessory to an election debacle. She can't afford to be seen as a liability to even moderate Democrats so they must shut down the 9-11 memorials as much as humanly possible. Or maybe I'm just doing some wishful thinking. Still, I have no doubt the only concern Clinton has is his and Hillary's personal interests. They are the center of the universe of course and it's about time we all acknowledged it .

"The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airwaves in serving the public interest. Nowhere is this public interest obligation more apparent than in the duty of broadcasters to serve the civic needs of a democracy by promoting an open and accurate discussion of political ideas and events."

The pompous asses could have said as much in fewer words:

"The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license with the understanding that it is your duty to act as a trustee of the public airwaves by promoting an open and accurate discussion of political ideas and events."

Since when does the DNC have the power to pull anyone's license?? That sounds like pure arrogance to me!!

Sounds far more than arrogance to me.

Frightening.

The socialists have so thoroughly infiltrated and usurped the Democratic party, are so sure of their coming take over of the government, so committed to their Socialist Principles and their right to rule (as opposed to govern) that they dare to openly threaten to shut down the media.

Surely, Congress cannot pull broadcast licences??? Truly, our Constitution hangs by a thread....

Even tho' the dems are the minority party as this program is supposedly going to air (meaning, if it sees the light of day in a worthwhile form), think about what a drastic threat this is to
free speech
truth
freedom of the media (whether they get it wrong or right).

The Democrats: attempting to govern by threats and intimidation day by day.

Buses Advertise the Failure of DC Schools

Will bad grammar spur voucher push in 107th Congress?

The message that went rolling through the streets of Washington, DC in the first days of the New Year was hardly one to inspire confidence in the capital city's public schools. To some, it was another reminder why private-school vouchers are needed to shake the system out of its lethargy and to give children a ticket to better opportunities.

"DC Public Schools Wants You!!! Go to Class - It' a Blast," proclaimed an advertisement splashed on the sides of 75 Metro buses. The signs were part of a $41,000 ad campaign designed and paid for by the Washington, DC public-school administration.

The objective was to lure truants back to school. But the lack of subject-verb agreement and the missing "s" to complete a contraction served mostly to draw new attention to problems the 69,000-student system has with literacy.

A new DC school board--an unusual hybrid of five elected and four mayor-appointed members--had just taken office amid high hopes for a fresh start for the beleaguered school system. Then, The Washington Post spotted and reported the grammatically mangled message.

School Superintendent Paul Vance was outraged. Calling the error "absolutely inexcusable," he said "it reinforces the perception that we're less than competent." His staff said the slogan went to the contractor with the "s" but came back on a proof without it--and no one caught the error.

School board members said they did not blame Vance, who took over last July. But the error was just the latest in a long string of embarrassing foul-ups for the DC school system going back to previous administrations. For instance, a year ago, school officials distributed a program that had the word "tomorrow" misspelled on its cover. A student pointed out the error to Superintendent Arlene Ackerman.

The staff errors are symptomatic of a larger malady: the widespread failure of the DC schools to teach reading, writing, and spelling at a basic level. A 1999 study done for the Milton and Rose D. Friedman Foundation found the DC public schools were the least efficient in the nation when spending was measured against indicators of basic literacy. According to this calculation, schools in the nation's capital wasted 23 percent of their tax funds when literacy was figured as the bottom-line outcome of education.

Almost three-fourths of the District's fourth-graders score "below basic" on the reading portion of the National Assessment of Educational Progress.

In 1998, the 105th Congress attempted to help low-income children in some of the city's most woeful schools by passing a bill to give a few thousand of them public scholarships worth up to $3,200 to enable them to transfer to private schools. The margin of passage for S1502--sponsored by Senators Dan Coats and Joseph Lieberman--was close in the House but it was supported by six Democrats, all of whom are still in Congress. President Clinton--who had sent his own daughter to an elite private school in Washington, DC--vetoed the bill.

Last year, House Majority Leader Dick Armey of Texas proposed an amendment to HR2--the Title I reform bill, a/k/a the Student Results Act--that would have provided for scholarships for children trapped in poor, failing, and dangerous schools. The Armey amendment failed 166-257.

Were the 107th Congress to pass voucher legislation, prospects seem good that President Bush--a voucher supporter, unlike former President Clinton--would sign it. The problem now is getting a bill to him through a Senate and House almost evenly split between the two major parties.

"I, for one, would wholeheartedly support" a revival of the voucher push, said senior Armey aide Heidi Stirrup. "There are plenty of others who think it's a waste of time--would never get out of the Senate and would be even harder to get out of the House. But I tell you, if you're a black parent whose child is trapped in a failing school, you'll be outraged that someone is not trying to help you help your child escape. We have got to carry on this effort--whether we fail or not. We cannot give up."

A Washington Post poll in May 1998 showed 65 percent of low-income black residents of the District support the use of federal dollars to help send their children to private or religious schools.

At least choice within the DC public school system continues to gain ground. Last fall, there were 33 charter schools on 40 campuses in Washington, enrolling almost 10,000 students, an increase of 40 percent from 1999. That's 14 percent of DC's public school enrollment. Washington eventually could become the first city where all public schools are charter schools.

LMAO! The Drive By Media acts as an DNC fax machine every day of the year! What has the Democrats up in arms is that ABC is going to present the OTHER side of the story. That can't be allowed so the Democrats want to make sure ABC doesn't even broadcast a hint of a conservative viewpoint. So much for "fair and balanced." And these are the people who bash FOX for reporting both sides of the story. They are consistent in wanting at all costs, to protect their media monopoly.

The movie has struck a nerve. The truth always opts sooner or later. Bill Clinton was the major enabler of 911, and as such he is the murderer of American innocents as is his traitor Democrat Party!!! Americans wake up!!! This current Democrat Party needs to be totally destroyed at the ballot box.

Disney previewed it for good reason. First it distributed copies knowing that the Democrat scum and vermin would attack the piece, insuring it would get widespread exposure no matter how much pressure Disney/ABC got from the traitor Democrat Party. Plus, loose copies out there and the Democrat insanity over this, is only building up the hype in the viewing public. This should be interesting. Maybe we are beginning to witness the death of the current Democrat Party. SHOW US THE UNEDITED VERSION, ABC, RUSH LIMBAUGH, HUGH HEWITT, or somebody!!!

It is ABC's fault for being stupid enough to give anybody an advanced copy of the film.

And perhaps for putting so much on the website.

THIS is from the REAL site for the miniseries (the DNC has a fake one) -- CLICK THIS TO SEE THE WHOLE THING:

I intend to write both of my Senators and tell them that a "probe" needs to be conducted upon the actions of these 'RAT Senators. This is using their ELECTED public office to threaten and intimidate. The so-called "Senators" who made these threats need to be held accountable for their despicable actions. Put them all in jail.

For eight years Madam Alright and her enablers Duh Klintons played liberal "Can't We All Just Get Along Politics" and you can see what it got us in the end, 3,000 DEAD

You got that right.

“Aside from scandals and investigations, [former FBI Director Louis] Freeh says Clinton let down the American people and the families of victims of the 1996 Khobar Towers terror attack in Saudi Arabia.

“After promising to bring to justice those responsible for the bombing that killed 19 and injured hundreds, Freeh says Clinton refused to personally ask Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah to allow the FBI to question bombing suspects the kingdom had in custody — the only way the bureau could secure the interviews, according to Freeh.

“Freeh writes in the book [My FBI], 'Bill Clinton raised the subject only to tell the crown prince that he understood the Saudis’ reluctance to cooperate and then he hit Abdullah up for a contribution to the Clinton Presidential Library.' ” -- 60 Minutes, Oct. 6, 2005

Interview On Orange TV  7-15-2003:

Rep. Dana Rohrabacher: "We didn't need to have 9-11.  9-11 happened because during the last administration Mr. Clinton didn't do his job.  I was just talking to an ambassador from Sudan who tried to give us all of the records on bin Laden.  He had all of the details of the entire terrorist network, and Madeleine Albright and Bill Clinton personally turned it down -- wouldn't even let the FBI copy them!"

Rep. Tom Feeney:  "In fairness, they were busy building nuclear plants for North Korea."

Rep. Rohrabacher:  "Right.  Precisely."

"Remember, Osama Bin Laden was offered to the United States on a silver platter and the Clinton administration said no." -- Neal Boortz, 3-2-2004 HERE   and: "A former CIA official told NBC News last week that [Clinton] White House orders to spare Bin Laden's life cut the chances of getting him in half.  Once again, they viewed terrorism as a law enforcement problem, worrying about Bin Laden's rights instead of just unleashing the CIA to exterminate  him." -- Boortz, 3-25-2004 HERE
"I've been to Sudan. And I was in Khartoum and met with some of the higher- ranking people with the Sudanese government. They told me personally -- I had heard that before -- that they actually offered [him] up to the Clinton administration  -- that is, Osama bin Laden -- if they wanted him." -- Sen. Richard Shelby of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence to Chris Matthews 7-22-2004
"A strict observance of the written laws is doubtless one of the high duties of a good citizen, but it is not the highest. The laws of necessity, of self- preservation, of saving our country when in danger, are of higher obligation.  To lose our country by a scrupulous adherence to written law would be to lose the law itself, with life, liberty, property, and all those who are enjoying them with us; thus absurdly sacrificing the end to the means."

"... when you see a rattlesnake poised to strike, you do not wait until he has struck before you crush him."-- FDR

"At the time, 1996, [bin Laden] had committed no crime against America so I did not bring him here because we had no basis on which to hold him, though we knew he wanted to commit crimes against America." -- W.J. Clinton as quoted by Mansoor Ijaz in an editorial in the Los Angeles Times Dec 5, 2001

Peter M. Leitner, a senior strategic trade adviser at the Defense Department ... says the previous [Clinton] administration rubber-stamped the shipment of top-end military-related telecommunications equipment to Syria, which is on the FBI's list of sensitive countries that pose a threat to U.S. security. ... 'We're giving them spread-spectrum radios, which are almost impossible to break into. We're giving them fiber optics. We're giving them a high level of encryption. We're giving them computer networks that can't be tapped,' Leitner said.  ... Leitner posits that the NSA wasn't able to detect the Islamic terrorists' plot because of the 'high quality of the communications gear that they've been acquiring over the last couple of years, thanks to the Clinton administration's decontrols on advanced telecommunications equipment.' " -- Paul Sperry, Sept. 12, 2001
"No president did more to ignore the mounting threat of Islamic terrorism than did Bill Clinton, and 3,000 people paid for his policies with their lives."

TV Movie Miffs Dems

An ABC made-for-TV movie, "The Path to 9/11," has riled the Democratic Party. Democratic National Committee Executive Director, Tom McMahon, blasted the movie, which he has not yet seen, as “a bald-faced attempt to slander Democrats and revise history right before Americans vote in a major election. This film would have us believe that Bill Clinton irresponsibly dallied with an intern while the terrorist threat mounted. This kind of misinformation is a cheap, callous political trick designed to divert attention from Bush Administration failures. As Katie Couric pointed out on the CBS Evening News, the war with the terrorists STARTED on 9/11. McMahon observed. “Bill Clinton was long out of office on that day and cannot be blamed for these attacks.”

Clinton spokesman, Jay Carson, issued a statement questioning the film's depiction of Clinton's record and suggesting that it wasn't a "serious treatment" of the facts. “The film says nothing about healthcare,” Carson said. “Yet, implementing a nationalized healthcare system was a major focus of the Clinton Administration. Further, President Clinton never ‘dallied’ with an intern. He was mentoring Ms. Lewinski, helping her learn the skills she needed to succeed in politics.”

Former Clinton Administration Secretary of State Madeleine Albright, said that although she had requested a copy of the film, ABC had not given her one. But, Ms. Albright said, she has been told by people who have seen it that it “It asserts as fact things that are not fact. For one, it depicts me as a decrepit hag and blithering idiot.”

Representative Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) called the film’s contention that terrorists attacked America during the Clinton years as “ludicrous.” “This film shows terrorists bombing the World Trade Center in 1993,” Pelosi said. “Whoever heard of such a thing? The film even has these alleged terrorists bombing embassies in Africa and, get this, a U.S. Naval vessel. It’s like a global jihad or something. I know movies often take liberties with the truth for dramatic purposes, but this film goes beyond the realm of credibility into pure fantasy.”

In a letter to the ABC television network, the Democratic senate leadership--Harry Reid (Nev), Dick Durbin (Ill), Debbie Stabenow (Mich), Charles Schumer (NY), and Byron Dorgan (ND)—threatened to revoke the company’s broadcast license once Democrats take back control of Congress. “The Communications Act of 1934 provides your network with a free broadcast license predicated on the fundamental understanding of your principle obligation to act as a trustee of the public airwaves in serving the public interest,” the senators wrote. “Congress is the judge of whether the public interest has been served. May we remind you that polls show our Party will regain control of Congress in this November’s election. You would do well to consider this as you weigh how to edit this film or whether to air it at all.”
