"It sounded like someone was being burned by a hot iron."

These witnesses can get a lot of detail out of a scream, can't they?

How about, "They knew we were here so they screamed to make us think they were being tortured."

One wonders what makes these assertions newsworthy.

Tortured or not this kind of story might put a little fear into the terrorists. I know they would never willingly help the coalition but in their Blair and Bush bashing they might unwittingly do so. And if it was the prisoners themselves trying to create propaganda it might work a little differently than they planned.

If you have ever heard the difference in a scream from pain and a yell, you would know what is happening with four walls between you and the victim.

Victim may be the wrong choice of words here.

Quite - all the indications are that the terrorists are rioting by purposefully making the place a pigsty and by yelling a lot, and the guards have responded by not giving a damn about maintenance and limiting their diet. A typical tug of war, and guess who eventually wins?
