Fires, injuries and arrests are reported in Columbus, Ohio, following last night's Ohio State win over Texas. The nation's top-ranked college football team knocked off number-two Texas 24-to-7 in Austin. That kicked off a wild celebration back in Columbus.
A fire battalion chief says more than 30 fires were set, mostly in trash bins and couches left outdoors. There was little property damage but five people have been arrested.
The chief says he and a university official and her husband suffered minor injuries when a car ran into them at a command post set up in a student union driveway.
Last night's win keeps Ohio State undefeated after two games and bolsters the school's hopes for a national championship. For defending champ Texas, the loss snaps a 21-game winning streak.
Much alchohol involved.
real classy people up there
Just what is the psychology behind celebratory rioting? It doesn't seem to happen down here, so I'm a little curious.
GO Ohio State!
This has been a long tradition (sans the fires) since I went there in the 70's. They'd tear up High Street real good after a Michigan defeat...breaking shop windows, slashing tires, etc... Just your ordinary everyday vandalism. Kind of pathetic, but hey...we won!
biig deal
Just a note to the uninformed: Students at Ohio State are not on campus yet. Dorms don't open until next week. As with many other university cities, most of the trouble is caused by the usual lame brain thugs looking for an excuse to trash something. No doubt some students participate, but the majority do not.
With a double "i"!
I mean, it's only a game. :)
Who Won? Your team won, you didnt Win anything. And that "win" makes it OK to run wild and destroy things belonging to others?
If I were in charge up there I'd collect a thousand dollar fine from every student at OS to pay for damages committed.
I don't think you'd be in charge very long.
More of what we've come to expect from the Buckeye nation (Thug U).
Could OSU fans be worse than Gator fans? It seems quite possible.
" ... mostly in trash bins and couches left outdoors ..."
I understand the reasoning behind leaving your trash bins outdoors, but why your sofas?
Things weren't that bad when I was there in the '60s. Seems like everything's gone to hell since then.
