When that very long day, September 14, 2001, was over, President Bush was totally drained.

I remember how frightened I was for President Bush when it was announced that he was coming to NYC that Friday. That's the only word for it, frightened. That entire week I was staying up til 2 and 3 in the morning, afraid that I'd be missing something in all the cable coverage. And none of us knew what would come next.

And none of us knew what would come next.

Exactly. The now nearly forgotten anthrax attacks hit toward the end of that September, and most people who paid any attention at all to world events expected more attacks at any time. Yet five years later, no follow-up attacks on our soil, and GWB gets almost no credit for that remarkable achievement.

Will we be hit again. Probably yes, someday. But five years without another attack. No one would have bet cash money five years ago that would be the case on this anniversary.
