Not selfish of you at all. I know exactly how you feel. I was born in NJ, raised in Jersey City and Union City before moving to Queens for a few years before moving to L.A. 30 years ago. I remember seeing the twin towers rise as they were being built, and my dad and I frequently took the PATH trains into the station under the WTC.
Even though I moved away so long ago, I still feel the ties to NYC and especially the WTC site. I love old St. Paul's Chapel and the complete serenity one feels inside it. Sigh.
I know what you mean about having ties to the area.
Mr.FF's brother lives in southern California. The evening of 9/11, he called us around 9pm our time (luckily Mr.FF had been able to get home by then). B-i-l said to Mr.FF, "I know you were nowhere near the WTC, but I needed to hear your voice."
I think it was just as difficult being 3,000 miles away.
